Kenyan long-distance star Sebastian Sawe received a rousing reception on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, upon his return to the country after making history as the first athlete to complete a marathon in under two hours during an officially recognised race.

Following his landmark performance at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 26, 2026, celebrations erupted across Kenya. Government officials and fans gathered at JKIA in Nairobi to welcome him, as cameras flashed and supporters cheered his arrival.

His family, including his parents, were among those present to receive him, just days after he accomplished what many consider the ultimate milestone in marathon running, clocking an official time of 1:59:30.

Addressing the jubilant crowd, Sawe expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am happy about this good day that you came to celebrate with me; I did not expect it.”

The celebrations were vibrant, with traditional dancers and musicians entertaining as his plane landed. The aircraft was also honoured with a ceremonial water salute, underscoring the significance of the moment.

Sawe’s parents had travelled for six hours to witness the historic homecoming. Speaking earlier from their residence, his father, Simeon Sawe, recalled his son’s long-held ambition, stating, “He used to tell me that one day, he was going to break the record. He was so determined and hopeful that he would.” He added, “I am happy for him and all of us here. We celebrated so much; my throat still hurts from all the cheering,” he said.

”We were surprised, we did not even finish watching the race. We will no longer trek, we will move around in a car, and we shall also go abroad. Before going for the marathon, he had promised me a world record,” Sawe’s father added.

Major milestone

The achievement marks a major milestone not only for Sawe and his family but also for the nation at large. The 31-year-old shattered the previous world record set by Kelvin Kiptum in 2023, finishing more than a minute faster.

During the race, Sawe showed remarkable consistency and strength, passing the halfway point in 1:00:29 before accelerating further to complete the second half even quicker in 59:01.

Reflecting on his achievement shortly after the race, he said, “I am feeling good. I am so happy. It is a day to remember for me,”.

Having now won all four marathons he has competed in, Sawe is already looking ahead to his next challenge later this year, expressing confidence that he can push the boundaries even further.
