Harambee Stars watch: Tyler Onyango and Sichenje’s clubs angling for Cup action in England

Midfielder Onyango recently departed his boyhood club, Everton, signing a three-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The move marks a fresh chapter for the 23-year-old British-born midfielder, who is eligible to play for Kenya through his paternal roots.
The Owls will host Bolton Wanderers at Hillsborough Stadium at a 5:00 pm kickoff.
Meanwhile, Sichenje’s Charlton Athletic face a tough cup tie away to Cheltenham Town at a 7:30 pm kickoff on Saturday, August 8, 2026, hoping to put an inconsistent pre-season run behind them with a win that guarantees progression to the next round.
The duo belong to a growing cohort of Kenyan footballers making their mark across Europe and the far-flung continents.
Elsewhere in the competition, Zak Vyner and his championship side, Wrexham AFC were eliminated following a first-round defeat.
The versatile Kenyan defender played the full 90 minutes as Wrexham’s return to competitive football ended in disappointment as they were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Onyango, who progressed through the ranks at Everton’s Finch Farm Academy, turns a new page after moving on from the Merseyside club. An injury-ravaged campaign previously saw him join Stockport County on loan for the 2025–26 season to secure valuable playing time before his contract at Everton officially expired.
The midfielder has already signalled his commitment to representing Kenya, agreeing to join the Harambee Stars setup in 2025 following positive talks with national team officials, including FKF Vice-President McDonald Mariga.
Although he was scheduled to link up with the national team last September for AFCON qualifiers, he was ultimately unable to travel to camp.
