Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner unused as Wrexham drops out of playoff position
By Luke Oluoch, April 8, 2026Kenyan prospect Zak Vyner and his Wrexham FC teammates lost a thrilling six-goal contest in the Championship against Southampton on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
The promotion-chasing side suffered a major setback in what was a “six-pointer” direct promotion playoff clash against the Saints. Southampton entered the tie in peak form, having eliminated Arsenal from the FA Cup on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
Vyner, notably, dropped out of the team’s starting lineup for the encounter.
After conceding two early goals, Wrexham’s Kieffer Moore flicked a superb header to Josh Windass, who rounded the defender to finish into the bottom corner.
Comeback
While the goal sparked hopes of a comeback for the hosts, the Saints’ third goal quickly took the wind out of their sails. A torrid second half saw the South Coast club overpower the Welsh side, compounding Wrexham’s struggle for a playoff position.
Speaking after the match, manager Phil Parkinson lamented a performance riddled with defensive lapses, adding that the team needs to rise from the defeat.

“We found ourselves two-nil down after conceding disappointing goals. In the second half, we started okay, but the third goal knocked the stuff out of us,” Parkinson said.
“Saints have good players, and they capitalised on the chances we presented to them.”he added
Wrexham now looks ahead to a five-game series that will decide their quest for back-to-back promotions to the EPL. Parkinson called for a more resolute performance moving forward.
Looking forward
“As a team, we have to look at ourselves closely as we go into the weekend. We have to ensure this game does not define us. We need to address the balance, and we will look at that before the next match.”
The match marked a tough two back-to-back outcomes for Vyner and his Wrexham AFC charges, who only picked up a point from the span.
Wrexham had battled to a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Friday, March 3, 2026, to sustain their promotion playoff before the recent setback.
Vyner has been a prominent figure in the team’s defensive shape after joining from Bristol City as a midseason signing. He has earned valuable time under his belt with performances against Chelsea in the FA Cup, ranking high on his impressive performances thus far.
