Harambee Stars icon Victor Wanyama announces retirement from football
By Luke Oluoch, April 3, 2026Harambee Stars legend Victor Wanyama has officially announced his retirement from football, marking the end of a decorated football journey that spanned almost two decades across different clubs in Africa, America and Europe.
The combative midfield enforcer during his heyday took to his over half a million followers’ Instagram page on Friday, March 3, 2026, to announce the development.
The former Tottenham Hotspur ace, famously known as the “Lion of Muthurwa,” further revealed that he would be pursuing a new path in football management.
He took the opportunity to thank his supporters, friends, and family for walking with him and supporting him through his checkered career.

“Today I announce my retirement from football. Four different countries. Six different clubs. A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch.
To my family, friends, agent, the fans, and the coaching staff that helped me throughout my career—thank you for walking this journey with me.
Transitioning to coaching
“I now take my next step into coaching, where I will be completing my UEFA A License this year,” his statement read.
Wanyama officially retired from international football with the Harambee Stars in September 2021. He later rescinded the decision in May 2025 to rejoin the squad under coach Benni McCarthy for the 2026 World Cup qualification cycle, as fans deemed his experience paramount for the Kenyan national team.
Uncertain
News of his retirement has left the football world in shock, coming days after he disclosed that he was uncertain about hanging up his boots despite not being involved in competitive football for nearly two years.
The Kenyan’s last competitive action came for Dunfermline AFC in Scotland, where he rejoined former boss Neil Lennon in early 2025.
“At the moment, I’m not entirely sure whether I will keep playing or retire,” Victor Wanyama confessed in an interview with the Conversation w/Chaxy Podcast.
“I’m a bit confused, but I’ll be making an announcement very soon.”
His official retirement has been received with mixed reactions, with his former club thanking him for the memories during his time with the north London club.
“We had Victor Wanyama, and he was nice; we enjoyed it. Wishing you all the very best in your retirement, Victor. Thanks for the memories.”

Wanyama joined the Saints on 11 July 2013, becoming the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League after being signed from Celtic FC on a record transfer fee by then-manager Mauricio Pochettino.
He went on to feature for the club until 2016, anchoring the midfield during one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.
In the summer of 2016, he moved to Southampton’s Premier League rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, where he stayed until March 2020.
Recently, he featured in a legends EPL match where Southampton faced Manchester United.
