Harambee Starlets keeper Lilian Awuor lauds fans for turning up in their win against India

Harambee Starlets goalkeeper Lilian Awuor has expressed gratitude to the home fans who turn out at Nyayo National Stadium in support of the national women’s football team during their FIFA Series clash against India on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
Kenya etched their name in history after booking a place in the final of the four-nations competition. The Kenyan side secured a 2-0 victory over India women’s national football team in their first-ever meeting, as Awuor kept a clean sheet.
First-half and second-half strikes from Martha Amunyolet and Tereza Engesha, respectively, proved decisive, sending Kenya into the final while India dropped to the third-place playoff where they will face Malawi women’s national football team.
Following the win over India, Awuor took to her Facebook page on Sunday, April 12, 2026, saying: ”Thank you all for turning out in big numbers to support us.”

A landmark achievement
Under the guidance of Beldine Odemba, the Starlets advanced to the final after registering their maiden win in a FIFA-recognised tournament, doing so convincingly on home turf. The result paves the way for an exciting final clash against the Australia women’s national football team, set for Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the same venue.
Australia had earlier stormed into the final with a commanding 5-0 victory over Malawi, sealing their spot before Kenya’s triumph over India.
Kenya in control
Kenya made an aggressive start, breaking the deadlock early through Amunyolet, who finished from close range. The hosts maintained pressure throughout the contest, keeping India largely confined to their half.
Shirleen Opisa nearly doubled the lead within the opening ten minutes after connecting with a well-delivered ball from Fasila Adhiambo, but Indian goalkeeper Shreeya Hooda reacted quickly to deny her.

The first half, however, saw a worrying moment when defender Ruth Ingosi suffered a head injury following a collision and was taken to hospital for further treatment.
Engesha wraps it up
In the second half, tactical substitutions added fresh energy to Kenya’s attack, and Engesha made an instant impact on her return to the national team by finding the back of the net. Her goal effectively secured the win and eased tension among the home supporters and bench. Harambee Starlets will next face Australia in the final on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the same venue.
