Gor Mahia vs Sofapaka: A rivalry told through numbers and statistics

By , January 30, 2026

Since first locking horns in the Kenyan top tier in 2009, Gor Mahia and Sofapaka have built a compelling league rivalry that now spans 35 meetings, shaped by contrasting paths and several season-defining moments, heading into the league encounter on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Nyayo Stadium.

Sofapaka burst onto the Premier League scene that year, backed by solid finances, which enabled them to quickly assemble a formidable squad that eventually won the league.

Gor Mahia, on the other hand, were emerging from a difficult period, having spent much of the previous decade fighting to stay afloat as they slowly rebuilt their status.

First encounter

Their first-ever clash on April 4, 2009, offered an early glimpse of what was to come. Rising star George Odhiambo, famously nicknamed “Blackberry,” found the net for Gor, but Sofapaka snatched a 2–1 win through goals from John Baraza and Charles Melubo.

Gor Mahia later settled the score in the reverse fixture in September, with Odhiambo again the difference-maker in a narrow 1–0 victory. That season ended with Sofapaka crowned champions, while Gor Mahia placed fifth.

From that point, the balance of power began to shift. Gor Mahia embarked on a dominant spell against Batoto Ba Mungu, going 10 consecutive league matches without defeat, registering five wins and five draws.

The standout encounter in that run came on October 23, 2013, when Danny Sserunkuma’s lone strike at Kasarani derailed Sofapaka’s title ambitions and effectively cleared Gor Mahia’s path to their first league triumph in 18 years, an achievement that cemented Sserunkuma’s legendary status among the Green Army faithful.

The rivalry reached a boiling point again during the three-way title battle of 2014 involving Gor Mahia, Sofapaka, and Tusker. In a heated contest on October 26, Sofapaka edged Gor Mahia 3–2 in a match overshadowed by crowd unrest. Yet the season’s final twist favoured Gor, as Sofapaka stumbled in their penultimate game, allowing K’Ogalo to clinch the title with a crucial last-day victory in Kisumu.

K’Ogalo’s dominance

In recent years, Gor Mahia have tightened their grip on the fixture, currently enjoying an 11-game unbeaten run against Sofapaka in league action. Avoiding defeat in their next encounter would see them surpass their longest-ever streak against Batoto Ba Mungu, previously set between 2009 and 2014.

While Sofapaka’s early financial strength helped usher in an era of foreign talent in Kenyan football, it is Gor Mahia’s imports who have consistently shone in this matchup. The latest to leave his mark is Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw, adding his name to a distinguished list that includes Danny Sserunkuma, Baba Kizito, Khalid Aucho, Meddie Kagere, Jacques Tuyisenge, Jules Ulimwengu, and Peter Lwassa.

Adu-Kwaw also made history by becoming the first Gor Mahia player to score twice in a single league game against Sofapaka, a fixture that has never witnessed a hat-trick.

Despite the impact of foreign players, it is a homegrown star who tops Gor Mahia’s scoring charts in this rivalry. Sammy Onyango leads with four goals, closely followed by George Odhiambo “Blackberry” with three. Several others, Julius Owino, Rama Salim, Sserunkuma, Kagere, Innocent Wafula, Ulimwengu, and Adu-Kwaw, have each found the net twice.

At the back, Gor Mahia have also imposed themselves. Out of the 35 league meetings, K’Ogalo have recorded 21 clean sheets, including an outstanding sequence of six straight shutouts between May 2011 and October 2013. Sofapaka, by comparison, have managed just eight clean sheets against their rivals.

Heading into the weekend fixture, Gor lead the table with 36 points, as Sofapaka languishes in the relegation zone, placed 17th with 14 points, a place above bottom side Kariobangi Sharks.
