Gor Mahia handed a timely boost as key defender returns
By Luke Oluoch, May 1, 2026Gor Mahia center-back Sylvester Owino has expressed his elation at returning to the team’s training sessions as the club steps up its push for the league title.
The Harambee Stars ace has been missing in action due to an injury suffered in an away clash against Ulinzi Stars. Despite making the bench for the Mashemeji Derby, Owino did not feature; however, he has since recovered fully and is hopeful to make the squad for the trip to Mumias for next Sunday, May 3, 2026, as they travel to face the Kakamega Homeboyz in this week’s round 30 clash.
K’Ogalo will cross into enemy territory, coming face-to-face with the mid-table side.
Fully fit and back
“I am glad to be back. I had been training on the sidelines, but I am now fully back in team training,” he stated.
“It was a little setback, but I am now ready to help the team fight in the remaining matches and ensure we secure the title. I saw my teammates fighting, and while I was happy with the effort, we didn’t always get the results we wanted in some games. But we hung on, and we are still there, ready to fight for the team in the remaining matches,” he added.
Looking ahead to the weekend fixture, Owino remained cautious of the threat posed by the Kakamega-based club.

“It is not going to be an easy game. They are fighting to finish in a good position, but we are ready to go there, focus on the points, and get the job done,” he concluded.
Gor heads to the final five games hoping to seal off the tense title race after the morale-boosting win over AFC Leopards that placed them in touching distance of the trophy.

71: Gor’s magic number
Facing the tougher games on paper, the log leaders are now tasked with hitting the 71-point mark, which is one better than what Ingwe can reach even with maximum points from their remaining games.
The first of the final five matches remains crucial as Charles Akonnor’s side looks to build momentum. Having recently rediscovered their winning form with a victory over AFC Leopards, the team aims to move past a difficult period marked by a string of consecutive defeats.
