Gor Mahia explain why players changed on the pitch and slept under tree before Kakamega Homeboyz clash

Record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have criticised the state of facilities at the Mumias Sports Complex following their league clash against Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday, May 6, 2026.
The two sides faced off in a crucial FKF Premier League encounter at the western Kenya venue, but the match was overshadowed by complaints regarding the condition of the stadium’s changing and sanitation facilities.
Poor reception
In a statement shared via Facebook after the game on Wednesday night, May 6, 2026, Gor Mahia revealed that the team was forced to remain outdoors before kick-off because the dressing room allocated to them was allegedly unusable.

According to the club, players ended up resting under trees and changing into their kits on the pitch due to the poor conditions inside the assigned room.
“If you were in Mumias on Sunday, you may have wondered why our boys were sleeping under trees and changing kits on the pitch just before kick-off against Homeboyz,” the club stated.
“We were handed what they call a ‘dressing room’… a small, filthy toilet that couldn’t even fit five people. We had no choice but to stay outside. Some facilities are just NOT worth it,” the statement added.
The incident has once again sparked debate over the quality of infrastructure in Kenyan football, with concerns growing about whether some league venues meet the minimum standards required to host top-flight matches.
Mumias Sports Complex has, in recent years, hosted several FKF Premier League fixtures, but concerns have repeatedly been raised over the condition of key amenities such as changing rooms, washrooms, and sanitation facilities.
Rising above the odds
Despite the odds, K’Ogalo secured an important victory in their pursuit of the league title, claiming a 1-0 hard-fought win over Omeboyz.

Gor Mahia found their breakthrough in improbable fashion via a late own goal from ex-AFC Leopards player Peter Thiong’o in the dying minutes of the tie. The match-winner occurred when an Ebenezer Assifuah cross inadvertently deflected off the striker and into the net.
The win, Gor Mahia’s most important yet in their push for the league title, saw Charles Akonnor’s men open a nine-point gap above their closest title challengers and arch rivals AFC Leopards, who have a match at hand.
