Gor Biro! Green Army fans bring Mumias to a standstill as FKF PL coronation looms

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the venue at Mumias Sports Complex, pitting Gor Mahia against Kakamega Homeboyz, was turned into a dancefloor of sorts as Gor faithful celebrated yet another crucial victory in their quest to reclaim the 2025/26 league honours.
The win on enemy territory was delivered late and in improbable fashion after a former AFC player, Peter Thiong’o, turned the ball into his own net late on, sparking dramatic scenes.
Having seen their title chances spurred by the morale-boosting victory over AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday, April 26, 2026, K’Ogalo, running high on belief and optimism, approached the clash hoping to maintain momentum.
Gor Biro chants
Following the victory, fans braved the mild downpour at the scene, breaking into chants of “Gor Biro Yawne Yo” (translated as “Gor is coming, pave the way!”). The celebratory moods and dances marked what was perhaps Charles Akonnor’s most important win yet for the club.
The clash against Homeboyz had all the hallmarks of a tense encounter, and it proved to be so as both the club chairman, Ambrose Rachier, and the patron, Eliud Owalo, followed the proceedings from the stands.
The title-chasing team was, however, spared blushes in the well-attended encounter by that late unfortunate own goal.

The mission, nonetheless achieved, saw Gor move nine points clear of close challengers AFC Leopards, who next face Mara Sugar hoping to get their title push back on track.
Homestretch
Momentum remains with Gor as they chase a record 22nd title, now needing only two wins and a draw to wrap up the league race, a feat that remains in sight if the club patron’s optimistic sentiments after the game are anything to go by.
“K’Ogalo are now nine points clear at the top of the KPL table. Bravo to the boys, we are on the homestretch to reclaiming the Kenya Premier League title,” Owalo’s statement after the game read.
