Gold in sight as Team Kenya angles for multiple finals in World Indoor Championship

Kenya’s hunt for gold in the ongoing World Indoor Championship in Poland enters the decisive stage on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with athletes going head-to-head in three finals.
According to NOCK Kenya, 400 m record holder Mercy Oketch, Brian Tinega, and Jacob Krop will be back on the track, competing for golds in their respective disciplines.
Tinega will be the first in action at 8:20 pm as he faces a star-filled track in the men’s 400 m finals. The middle distance athlete will be seeking to make history by becoming the first Kenyan to win a medal in this event.

Meanwhile, Mery Oketch will also take the quest for individual glory in an equally star-studded track as the women’s 400 m race final takes centre stage at 10:48 pm.
Oketch opened Kenya’s campaign in the 400m qualifying rounds with a composed second-place finish, timing 51.57, behind the Czech Republic’s Lurdes Manuel (51.08).
Jacob Krop, who secured qualification in the men’s 3000 m, will be tasked with carrying the national flag in the category in the final slated for 9:22 pm.

There will also be a semifinal contest for the impressive youngster Noah Kibet, who hogged the headlines with his composed finish in Friday’s men’s 800 heats.
The 21-year-old’s performance was particularly eye-catching, with the youngster showcasing tactical leads and remarkable grit to finish first at the Tauron Arena Krakow, ahead of Maciej Wyderka, Sean Dolan, Ryan Clarke, and James Harding in the middle-distance race.
His display elicited praises from Athletics Kenya official Barnabas Korir, who lauded the youngster’s composed finish as well as other Kenyans who made it through to the next phases of the races.
“Day 1 of the World Indoor Championships 2026 has once again demonstrated the exceptional talent of Kenyan athletes on the global stage,” part of Korir’s congratulatory message read.
