FKF PL title race: Who’s in, who’s out as Gor and Leopards resume league hunt

By , May 9, 2026

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League enters a decisive stage this weekend, as Matchweek 31 takes centre stage amid the fierce title race and relegation battle.

Gor Mahia remains firmly in the driver’s seat with 64 points after 30 matches following their win against Homeboyz in their previous league encounter.

The victory left them holding a solid nine-point lead over arch-rivals AFC Leopards, though the title race is not officially over.

With only four matches remaining for the leaders, the gap at the top is significant but mathematically reachable for the chasing pack.

Title contenders AFC Leopards will face Mara Sugar FC at 4:15 pm in another highly anticipated encounter. Leopards, one of the league’s traditional giants, will be under pressure to deliver a strong performance as they continue their pursuit of the 2025/26 Football Kenya Federation Premier League crown.

The timing of their clash remains significant.

A win against 9th-placed Mara Sugar today would temporarily cut that lead to 6 points, forcing Gor Mahia to win on Sunday, May 10, 2026, to maintain their comfortable cushion.

Permutations

However, on the flip side, a defeat for Ingwe, who are returning from a two-week break following their 1-0 Mashemeji Derby loss, could significantly put Gor in line for an early coronation.

Ingwe, on 55 points from 29 games, need to bounce back to winning ways to stand any chance of extending their pursuit of the league leaders.

If Gor Mahia wins, they reach 67 points. Meanwhile, depending on the Leopards’ result against Mara Sugar, Charles Akonnor’s charges could potentially be in a position to officially wrap up the title in Week 32.

A loss to Police, however, would blow the race wide open, especially if the Leopards pick up maximum points from the Awendo club.

Gor will face off against Muranga Seal in their next game.

The foregoing comes as Gor Mahia rubbished assertions from Police Fc that they, the reigning champions, are still in the race for the league honours.

In a statement that could pass as possible banter aimed at getting the sail out of the Police FC, K’Ogalo on Saturday, May 9, 2026, asserted that the law enforcers are already out of the title race heading into the weekend ties.

“As things stand, Police (our next opponents) and every team below 2nd place (including ‘Ndisi FC’) are officially out of the title race. Adui sasa ni mmoja tu—Otoyo,” Gor Mahia jibed.

Speaking to the club portal on Saturday, May 9, 2026, Nicholas Muyoti insisted that they have not given up yet on the title and will give all to waging a defense until the last minute.

Muyoti labelled their Sunday, May 10, 2026, clash against leaders Gor as the perfect moment to further demonstrate their title ambitions.

“From the time I came, the progression has been well, and confidence has been growing. I am happy with the output, the response, and the manner in which we have fought back as a team,” he stated.

“We are not done with the title. We are still in it, fighting, and we will fight to the end. The game against Gor is a perfect opportunity to send that statement and I believe the boys will show just that,” he affirmed
