Fever-pitch hits high as Eliud Kipchoge seeks history in Cape Town

The world of athletics is watching keenly as Kenyan marathon icon Eliud Kipchoge takes part in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, where the celebrated long-distance runner is poised to make history by competing in his first official marathon race on African soil. The race, which takes place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, has rapidly established itself as Africa’s premier marathon.
The multiple Olympic champion was warmly received at Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, with city officials, race organisers, and media representatives turning out to welcome one of the most decorated figures in long-distance running.
Kipchoge in Langa
In the period before the actual marathon day, Kipchoge has been engaging South African nationals in different organized inspirational activities. Recently, Eliud Kipchoge underlined the importance of community and youth empowerment following a visit to Langa in Cape Town, South Africa.
The two-time Olympic marathon champion reflected on how the support and influence of those around him shaped his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the greatest distance runners in history. Kipchoge said the sense of togetherness he experienced growing up continues to guide and inspire him today.
“Growing up, community was always an important part of my life. The people around us shape who we become, inspire us to dream, and remind us that together we are stronger. Today that feeling is stronger than ever,” said Kipchoge.
During his visit to Langa, one of Cape Town’s most historic townships, Kipchoge spent time interacting with children, families, and aspiring athletes. He described the experience as meaningful and inspiring, noting the enthusiasm and determination he witnessed within the community.

“Visiting Langa here in Cape Town and spending time with the children, families, and young athletes has been truly special. Seeing the joy, energy, and determination in the community reminds me that talent and potential live everywhere in the world when young people are given opportunity and support,” he added.
Kipchoge emphasised that investing in young people is essential not only in Kenya and South Africa, but globally. According to the marathon icon, providing opportunities and encouragement to the next generation can unlock immense talent and help communities thrive.
“Moments like these continue to inspire me and remind me why it is so important that we keep investing in the next generation, in Kenya, in South Africa, and around the world,” he stated.
Widely admired for his achievements on and off the track, Kipchoge has consistently used his platform to promote discipline, education, and community development, especially among young people across Africa.
Meanwhile, despite a glittering career that includes Olympic gold medals and a former world record, the 41-year-old has never before taken part in a full marathon on the African continent, making Sunday’s race a landmark moment.
