Scent stacking: The art of blending perfumes to create unique signatures

Buying a single bottle of designer perfume and wearing it everywhere used to be the ultimate beauty flex. Today, perfume afficionados are ditching the traditional signature scent for something far more creative.

Enter scent stacking, the art of layering multiple fragrances to build a custom smell that no one else can easily copy.

From combining local perfumed body lotions with imported designer sprays to mixing affordable oil rolls-on with light body mists, the trend has taken over beauty routines. It is less about showing off a fancy label and more about expressing individuality through a unique blend of aromas.

Technique behind fragrance layering

Scent stacking is not just about spraying three different perfumes on top of each other and hoping for the best. Done wrong, it can create a harsh, overpowering smell that fills an entire matatu. The trick lies in building layers from heavy to light.

People usually start in the shower with a scented body wash, followed by a rich, hydrating body cream or petroleum jelly to seal in moisture.

Because skin surface temperature directly modulates fragrance evaporation profiles, starting with a moisturised base gives the scent molecules a solid surface to cling onto, preventing them from evaporating too fast in the afternoon.

Once the base is set, the actual perfuming begins. A heavy base note, such as warm vanilla, sandalwood, or amber, goes on first. Lighter, fresher notes, like sweet jasmine, citrus, or rose, are then sprayed on top.

Some beauty lovers even apply one scent to their wrists and a completely different one behind their ears or on their clothes, allowing the scents to mix naturally as they move through the day.

Why the trend is resonating

However, layering an affordable Ksh800 concentrated scent oil with a mid-range body mist allows anyone to achieve a rich, long-lasting aroma without breaking the bank.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have also fuelled the craze, with local content creators sharing their daily “scent combos” and budget-friendly beauty finds.

More than anything, young Kenyans love the freedom of customisation. Scent stacking turns fragrance into an evolving personal ritual, letting you switch your smell to match your mood, outfit, or weather.
