Rio Ngumoha eyes bigger Liverpool role after impressive pre-season performances
By Joel Masibo, July 30, 2026Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha believes the club’s pre-season campaign has given every player a valuable chance to prove themselves under new head coach Andoni Iraola as he continues to impress during the Reds’ tour of the United States.
The teenage forward capped another encouraging display by scoring the only goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The win followed an earlier 4-2 triumph over Sunderland, giving the Reds consecutive victories in pre-season.
Reflecting on his goal, Ngumoha admitted it was not the cleanest strike but was delighted to see it find the back of the net.
“I don’t know, it was a bit scruffy! But if you don’t shoot, you don’t score! So, yeah, I’ll claim that,” he said.
The Liverpool academy graduate expressed his delight at being integrated into the senior squad, saying the experience has boosted his confidence despite his young age.
“It has been good. All the lads are treating me like I’m a professional player. Obviously, I’m still young and I’m learning, but all the players have been top. It has been good,” Ngumoha said.
The 17-year-old revealed that players only learn whether they will feature shortly before matches, making every training session crucial.
“When we have the meeting before the game, that’s when we find out. It’s all a surprise. We’re just working hard in training. It has been top,” he explained.
Describing his winning goal against Wrexham, Ngumoha said he reacted instinctively after receiving support from teammate Dominik Szoboszlai.
“Dom received the ball, I was just running and obviously I slipped a bit. I tried to drive and I just saw a shot. I shot and it went in. Any little gap you can find really in the box is what it’s about,” he said.
Ngumoha believes this pre-season could play a major role in determining his opportunities during the new campaign, especially with Iraola beginning his tenure at Anfield.
“Definitely. On from the end of last season, I just want to play and start as many games as I can. These games are a really good showcase to show the manager, because it’s a fresh start for everyone. It’s really important and it’s good,” he said.
The winger also outlined what Iraola expects from him, saying the manager wants his attackers to lead Liverpool’s aggressive pressing game while continuing to be fearless in one-on-one situations.
“Pressing. We like to press high – so any duels we can win, we can go at full speed. And then on the ball, when I get the chance one-v-one, take it on. If not, look, come back and keep playing. Goals and assists as well,” Ngumoha said.
He added that the coaching staff have encouraged him to remain true to his natural style of play.
“All the coaching staff are just telling me to play my normal game really, whether that’s going inside or outside. I’ve been working on it in training anyway, playing on the right and the left. Just being unpredictable really,” he said.
Ngumoha’s performances during Liverpool’s pre-season tour have strengthened his case for more first-team opportunities as the Reds prepare for the 2026-27 season under Iraola.
