Manchester United’s defensive crisis raises alarm

Despite summer additions aimed at reinforcing the squad—capped off by the signing of midfielder Carlos Baleba alongside Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos—United ended the transfer window on September 1, 2026, without making a single defensive acquisition.
Baleba remains sidelined with a muscle injury, highlighting a recruitment drive heavily biased toward midfield while leaving the back four dangerously light on depth.
Neville warned that the current squad setup leaves manager Michael Carrick exposed to a potential crisis the moment injuries strike his key defenders.
“Michael, post-transfer deadline day, admitted he wanted to make more defensive signings. If Luke Shaw is to get injured—which he is so used to as the season progresses—or he comes under pressure, or Harry Maguire gets injured, then you look at what is left; they will be in real trouble.
Plenty of games to play
“The team playing right now is United’s best eleven. If that remains on the pitch, it is fine, but they have so much football to play and they have left themselves short in defence,” he said on Saturday, September 6, 2026.
The club had previously identified the left-back position as a priority target as they seek a long-term successor to Shaw. However, despite interest in high-profile targets like Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, United walked away from the deadline without completing a deal.
While Neville remains alarmed by the shortcoming, Carrick offered a contrasting perspective post-deadline.
Speaking on the state of the squad, the manager insisted he was fully satisfied with his current options and expressed firm conviction that the new arrivals have left the team stronger than when the window opened.
“We have brought in some very good players and improved the squad in different ways,” Carrick stated. “We have grown. You go into the window, and when you come out of it, you want to be stronger than you were at the start.”
“I am convinced we are that. Transfer windows are never straightforward, and this window in particular has been challenging for different reasons.”
The gaffer insisted that they now shifted focus to getting their objectives met with the personnel on board.
“We have made the most of the situation we found ourselves in,” he added. “We have to make the most of what we have and understand where we are. I think we are a very good team, and we want to keep getting better.”
