The Red Devils began their Premier League campaign with a surprise defeat to Hull City, while Ipswich made an encouraging return to the top flight by defeating Sunderland 2-1 with a dramatic late winner from Jack Clarke.
Manchester United seeking immediate response
The defeat was particularly notable because it represented United’s first-ever Premier League loss to Hull and also became the first occasion on which the Red Devils had been beaten by a promoted team on the opening day.
United had 21 attempts at goal but failed to make their pressure count, highlighting the lack of cutting edge that Carrick will want his team to correct against Ipswich.
Carrick’s return to Old Trafford in the New Year last season had initially come with United sitting seventh after 21 matches. The former midfielder subsequently oversaw a strong recovery, with United winning 12 of their final 17 league fixtures to finish third.
That was the club’s best Premier League finish since 2022-23 after successive eighth- and 15th-place campaigns.
United strengthened their squad during the summer by bringing in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow, while Carlos Baleba’s move from Brighton was also completed recently.
However, the additions and encouraging pre-season preparations could not prevent a poor start against Hull.
United will now return to familiar surroundings hoping to produce a much stronger display in front of their home crowd.
Ipswich arrive with confidence
Ipswich could hardly have asked for a more dramatic beginning to their Premier League comeback.
The Tractor Boys secured a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, with Clarke scoring in the 90th minute against his former club to seal three valuable points.
The victory was Ipswich’s first Premier League win of the campaign and immediately provided new manager Gary O’Neil with encouragement.
Ipswich were relegated at the end of the 2024-25 Premier League season after collecting only 22 points from 38 matches and finishing 19th.
They responded impressively in the Championship, finishing second with 84 points to earn an immediate return to the top division.
Kieran McKenna had overseen that promotion but subsequently stepped away from management during the summer, paving the way for O’Neil to take charge.
The new boss inherited a squad that required considerable strengthening, and Ipswich invested more than £100 million during the transfer window. Seven new signings were handed their debuts against Sunderland.
Those additions made an instant impact as Ipswich collected maximum points.
Their confidence was further boosted during the week when they defeated Leicester City 3-1 in the League Cup, marking their first victory over the Foxes since 2013.
United, meanwhile, were given a bye into the next round of the competition because of their European commitments last season.

United continue to deal with several fitness problems ahead of their first home league game.
Carlos Baleba, who only recently completed his move from Brighton, will not be available for his debut after suffering an ankle injury during Brighton’s pre-season camp in Austria.
Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte are also expected to miss the fixture.
There were no fresh injury problems arising from the Hull defeat, although Carrick could make changes to his starting XI.
Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are among the players pushing for inclusion from the beginning.
Ipswich Town team news
Ipswich rotated heavily for their midweek League Cup encounter with Leicester, making nine changes from the side that defeated Sunderland.
Further alterations are therefore possible when O’Neil’s men travel to Manchester.
Dara O’Shea was the only member of the defensive line to retain his place against Leicester and is expected to continue at the back.
Marcelino Nunez also started that match and produced an outstanding display, scoring twice, including a spectacular effort from around 45 yards.
Both players could therefore start their third consecutive game.
Clarke’s late goal against Sunderland came after he entered from the bench, but his match-winning contribution could earn him a starting role at Old Trafford.
Abdul Fatawu could consequently make way.
Ipswich have relatively few injury concerns, although Azor Matusiwa and Florentino Luis remain unavailable. Florentino is still waiting to make his first appearance for the club.
