Liverpool’s talented youngster departs the club amid squad rebuild

The 21-year-old rose through the ranks at Liverpool’s Academy after joining as a five-year-old, going on to feature regularly for the U18s and U21s in recent seasons.
He departs the Reds having been named on the bench for two senior League Cup ties at Anfield last season. His sole match action for the senior side came as a second-half substitute during a pre-season friendly against Athletic Club in August 2025.
Pilling played just over 20 minutes in that fixture, completing 9 of his 11 passes, making three recoveries, and winning four of his five duels—including both aerial contests.
Family football legacy
Born in St Helens, Pilling continued a family legacy at Anfield. His great-grandfather, Jack, represented the Reds in over 100 wartime fixtures during the 1940s.
A late developer, Pilling struggled to break into the first team despite being a regular in the U21 lineup over the last two seasons under the tutelage of head coach Rob Page.
He was a standout performer in Liverpool’s English Football League (EFL) Trophy tie against Burton Albion in 2025, winning all four of his ground duels and barely putting a foot wrong while anchoring the midfield alongside Jay Spearing.
Preseason run
The development comes as the Reds near a breakthrough in their quest to land Paris St. Germain winger Bradley Barcola. After missing out on key targets, Liverpool are closing in on the winger, according to BBC Sport.
The French winger has reportedly reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the Reds, though the two clubs have yet to finalise a transfer fee.
