Key stats behind new Chelsea signing Pep Chavarria

However, the 28-year-old Rayo Vallecano left-back’s journey, work ethic and continued development could explain why new manager Xabi Alonso sees him as a valuable addition.
Chavarria took a considerably longer route to the top than many of his peers. He did not play in La Liga until he was 24, while his first taste of European football did not arrive until he was 27, when he featured for Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League against Hacken and was dismissed.
His unconventional rise could ultimately be one of the reasons Chelsea have been attracted to him. Rather than being another highly rated teenager signed for future resale value, Chavarria arrives as an experienced player who has repeatedly surpassed expectations.
The departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid has also created an opening on Chelsea’s left flank. Alonso’s immediate objective is to challenge for trophies, meaning a player who can contribute immediately could be more important than another long-term development project.
Chavarria’s rise at Rayo Vallecano
Chavarria’s move to Rayo Vallecano in 2022 proved to be another important stage in his development.
Andoni Iraola was managing the Madrid-based club when the defender arrived, and the coach’s high-intensity approach suited Chavarria particularly well. Iraola expected his full-backs to attack aggressively, overlap with teammates and provide width.
Chavarria has gradually expanded his responsibilities since then. Although his ability to charge forward remains one of his defining characteristics, he has become increasingly capable of moving inside, underlapping and participating in midfield phases.
His relentless work rate remains at the heart of his game.
During his three seasons with Rayo, Inigo Perez also played an important role in helping Chavarria become a more complete modern full-back. The player has regarded Perez as the finest coach he has worked under, with the manager encouraging him to influence matches in several different areas.
Numbers highlight his importance
Last season represented a significant achievement for both Rayo and Chavarria as the Madrid club reached a European final.
Chavarria became one of Rayo’s principal outlets on the left, recording more than 2,000 touches in La Liga and consistently delivering balls into the opposition penalty area.
His statistics demonstrate that his contribution is not limited to attacking.
He ranked among the competition’s leading players for crosses from open play, while also featuring prominently for corners won. Defensively, he was similarly effective, ranking among the best for blocking opposition crosses and recovering possession in the defensive third.
That does not necessarily mean Chelsea are acquiring a player capable of replicating the creative influence Alex Grimaldo had on the left for Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Instead, Chavarria’s value could come from his constant movement, ability to stretch defensive lines and willingness to make repeated runs.
Premier League adaptation
There are still obvious uncertainties surrounding the move.
Chavarria has spent his entire professional career in Spain and has never played outside the country. Moving directly into the Premier League represents a significant challenge, particularly given the speed and physical demands of English football.
His defensive work at set pieces could also come under greater scrutiny. Premier League teams place considerable emphasis on dead-ball situations, and opponents may attempt to exploit any weakness in that area.
His attacking output is another area that requires improvement. Despite scoring a memorable long-range goal against Atletico Madrid in September, he finished last season with just one league goal.
Discipline has also occasionally been an issue. Chavarria received multiple red cards, including one against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Can Chavarria raise Chelsea’s standards?
Chelsea supporters may not be welcoming a teenage wonderkid or an established global superstar. Instead, they could be getting a player whose career has been built around persistence and continuous improvement.
Chavarria has successfully navigated every increase in expectation, moving from the lower divisions to the Segunda Division before establishing himself in La Liga.
