Hull City coach responds to fans’ ‘we are winning the league’ chants during Chelsea draw
By Luke Oluoch, September 13, 2026Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has addressed the travelling supporters chanting ‘we’re winning the league’ following his side’s impressive 2-2 draw away at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
The Tigers faithful belted out the ironic chants during the closing stages as the visitors preserved their unbeaten start and sat above the hosts in third place.
The league newcomers were only undone by a late João Pedro goal that denied them a famous victory to crown a sensational start, which has already seen them beat Manchester United and Coventry City, alongside draws against Aston Villa and Xabi Alonso’s side.
Speaking after the match, the Serbian boss directly addressed the terrace humour while keeping expectations grounded:
“We have an excellent fanbase; with their support, no matter if we lose or win, they have tried to push us more, which is excellent. We know our targets, which is to stay in the league, and soon we will afford to play with more confidence when we have enough points on the board,” he said.
The draw moves the newcomers onto 8 points from their opening 4 Premier League matches.
Unbeaten Hull
Unbeaten and taking the division by storm in third place, Jakirović noted that the hard-earned point reinforced his belief in Hull’s capacity to compete against established Premier League opposition—leaving him encouraged despite letting a lead slip late on at Stamford Bridge.
“We’ve shown again that we are a serious team (at this level) and that it is not going to be easy to beat us. We can create problems for teams and I still think that we can play even better with some better decision-making and being a bit more brave with the players having a bit more belief in themselves. Every game for us at the moment is a very big experience, but to have eight points from the first four games – it’s thank you very much because we are in a very good way,” he stressed.
A new defensive low for Blues
For Chelsea, the encounter continued their winless streak against newly promoted teams. The Blues remain winless in their last home league matches against newly promoted sides, extending a difficult historical trend.
Xabi Alonso’s team also moved to 10 goals in their first four Premier League games, making them the best attacking side in the division across their opening 4 matches. However, they hold a goal difference of just +1, having conceded two or more goals in every league game so far this season.
