Chelsea vs Brighton: Blues target third straight win under Alonso

Chelsea will welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, August 30, 2026, as Xabi Alonso’s side look to maintain their perfect start under the new manager.
The Blues have already secured victories against Fulham and Luton Town since Alonso took charge, giving them an opportunity to record three consecutive wins and build early momentum.
Brighton, however, head into the encounter in equally positive spirits. Fabian Hurzeler’s team have won two of their opening three fixtures across domestic and European competition and have produced eight goals without conceding during those victories.
Chelsea aiming to continue strong start
Chelsea endured a difficult campaign last season, eventually finishing 10th in the Premier League after going through two managerial changes.
Enzo Maresca left the club on New Year’s Day following a breakdown in his relationship with the ownership, despite previously leading the team to success in both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
His successor, Liam Rosenior, was dismissed on April 22 after only around three months in the position. Chelsea’s disappointing league campaign ultimately left them without European football for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
Alonso was subsequently appointed on a four-year contract after leaving Real Madrid in January following a difficult spell at the Spanish club.
The former midfielder made an impressive competitive start with Chelsea, guiding them to a 3-2 victory away to Fulham. Joao Pedro opened the scoring after only 31 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest goal on the opening weekend of a Premier League season.
Fulham responded twice through Josh King and Gonzalo Garcia, but Chelsea eventually claimed all three points thanks to goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
The Blues then advanced in the EFL Cup by beating Luton Town 2-0. Danny Welbeck scored with a header shortly after half-time before an own goal from Hakeem Odoffin completed Chelsea’s victory.
Welbeck’s arrival from Brighton in August was one of the more unexpected moves of Chelsea’s transfer window, particularly given the club’s longstanding preference for younger recruits.
Brighton arrive with confidence
Brighton have also begun the campaign impressively and will believe they can cause Chelsea problems once again.
The Seagulls demolished Aston Villa 4-0 in their opening Premier League match, finding the net four times within the first 31 minutes. Victor Lindelof’s own goal was followed by strikes from Maxim De Cuyper and a Jack Hinshelwood double.
Villa were subsequently reduced to 10 men after Joao Gomes was dismissed following a VAR review.
Brighton also secured their place in the Conference League league phase after overcoming Tromso. Following a goalless draw in Norway, Hurzeler’s men produced a commanding 4-0 home victory, with Charalampos Kostoulas, De Cuyper, Mats Wieffer and Olivier Boscagli all getting on the scoresheet.
Recent meetings between the teams provide Brighton with further encouragement. The Seagulls have won their last four encounters with Chelsea in all competitions.
That sequence includes a 3-0 victory at the Amex in April and a memorable 3-1 comeback at Stamford Bridge last September. Chelsea were reduced to 10 men after Trevoh Chalobah’s dismissal before former Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored twice during stoppage time.
Despite Brighton’s recent dominance, Chelsea still have the superior overall record. Across 27 competitive meetings, the Blues have won 16 times, while Brighton have six victories and the remaining five matches have ended level.
Chelsea team news
Chelsea could welcome Moises Caicedo back into contention after the midfielder missed the victories over Fulham and Luton because of a training-ground injury.
Marco Palestra remains unavailable because of another injury, while Jordan Henderson is still recovering from the wrist problem he suffered while celebrating England’s World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico.
Wesley Fofana is also back in contention after completing his suspension. The defender had been banned following the red card he received against Sunderland on the final day of last season.
Enzo Fernandez continues to attract transfer speculation involving Manchester City and could once again be omitted from Alonso’s matchday squad.
Robert Sanchez is expected to retain his place in goal despite questions over his position following an uncertain performance against Fulham.
Brighton injury update
Brighton have concerns over Hinshelwood, who missed the European victory against Tromso after sustaining an injury in training.
Matt O’Riley could replace him if he fails to recover in time.
Georginio Rutter is another doubt after continuing to wear a protective boot following the Aston Villa game. If Rutter is unavailable, Kostoulas or new loan arrival Promise David could be asked to spearhead the attack.
The Seagulls remain without Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson, who are all sidelined for longer periods.
