Chelsea fall to Juventus as Zhegrova strike seals victory despite Mudryk comeback
By Joel Masibo, August 5, 2026Chelsea’s difficult pre-season preparations continued after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Juventus in a friendly match at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, with Edon Zhegrova scoring the decisive goal in the second half.
The match also marked the long-awaited return of Mykhailo Mudryk, who featured for the Blues for the first time in 20 months. The Ukrainian winger had been sidelined since November 2024 after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium. Following the conclusion of his case last week, he immediately linked up with Chelsea’s squad in Asia.
Mudryk entered the match with just eight minutes remaining, replacing Nicolas Jackson, who had come on at half-time for new signing Danny Welbeck. Although the crowd welcomed him warmly, the limited time on the pitch gave the winger little opportunity to influence the outcome.

His brightest contribution came with a lively run down the flank before delivering a dangerous cross, but Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin reacted quickly to collect the ball.
Juventus eventually broke the deadlock midway through the second half when Zhegrova curled an impressive effort beyond Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders to hand the Italian giants the lead.
Chelsea struggled to produce a response after falling behind, extending concerns over a pre-season campaign that has lacked consistency. The defeat followed their high-scoring 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers and a 2-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur, who played much of the second half with 10 men.
The result is likely to increase pressure on head coach Xabi Alonso as he attempts to streamline an oversized squad. Chelsea named 21 substitutes for the encounter, while several key players, including Enzo Fernandez and recent arrivals Valentin Barco, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Morgan Rogers, remain unavailable following their World Cup commitments.
Slow first half offers few chances
Danny Welbeck was handed his first start in Chelsea colours after his summer move from Brighton and nearly marked the occasion with a goal.
The experienced striker connected with an inviting cross from teenage winger Geovany Quenda in the 13th minute, but his glancing header drifted just wide of the post.
The opening period was disrupted by numerous fouls and physical challenges, resulting in a scrappy contest that produced little attacking quality from either side.
Apart from Welbeck’s header and an off-target effort from Quenda, Chelsea rarely threatened, while Juventus gradually became more dangerous as the interval approached.
Jeremie Boga tested Chelsea’s defence with a series of dangerous deliveries before forcing goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into a smart save moments before half-time, ensuring the teams went into the break level.
Juventus make breakthrough
Chelsea made several substitutions at half-time, introducing Estevao Willian, Mamadou Sarr, Nicolas Jackson and goalkeeper Mike Penders in an effort to improve their performance.
Despite the fresh legs, the Blues failed to establish control. New signing Marco Palestra showed encouraging signs with a dangerous cross-shot that Perin gathered comfortably before Jamie Gittens could capitalise on any rebound.

Soon after another wave of substitutions from Alonso, Juventus found the breakthrough. Zhegrova received possession outside the area and curled a superb strike beyond Penders to score what proved to be the match-winning goal.
Jackson, who had earlier been caught by a heavy challenge from former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, was later substituted, while Chelsea were unable to create a clear chance to force an equaliser before the final whistle.
The latest defeat leaves Chelsea with more questions than answers as they continue preparations for the new season, while Juventus head away from Hong Kong with another encouraging pre-season victory.
