Blow to Arsenal as Premier League champions confirm Saliba injury setback

Arsenal have announced that defender William Saliba is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining a back injury, although the French international has avoided the need for surgery.
As the club’s players return from international duty following the FIFA World Cup, Saliba is among those unable to immediately rejoin full training after picking up the injury during France’s semi-final defeat to Spain earlier this month. The 25-year-old was forced off during the match, with early reports suggesting he could require an operation.
However, Arsenal have now ruled out surgery following further medical examinations in London.
In an official statement, the club said: “Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.

“Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.
“William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period. Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
The update means Saliba will miss Arsenal’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City on August 16 and is also expected to be unavailable when the Gunners begin their Premier League campaign against Coventry City five days later.
Return date
Although Arsenal have not provided a specific return date, the description of the injury suggests the defender could be sidelined well beyond the three-to-six-week recovery period typically associated with less severe back problems.
Medical experts generally classify more serious Grade 3 back injuries as conditions involving herniated discs, nerve compression or spinal fractures, which often require significantly longer rehabilitation depending on how the player responds to treatment.

Should Saliba remain out for between six and 12 weeks or longer, he would likely miss a crucial run of league matches before the end of October, including difficult fixtures against Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool.
His absence adds to Arsenal’s growing injury concerns ahead of the new campaign. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka both dealt with fitness issues during the World Cup, while Gabriel Magalhaes has also reportedly been managing injury problems.
With several key players racing to regain full fitness before the season begins, Mikel Arteta faces an early challenge as Arsenal prepare for another Premier League title push.
