Analysis: Why Real Madrid may sell Vinicius Jr amid Arsenal interest

By , July 26, 2026

Brazil ace Vinicius Junior has now moved into the final year of his contract with Real Madrid with Premier League champions Arsenal monitoring the situation surrounding his next move in the transfer window.

Should negotiations over a new deal fail to produce an agreement, the Spanish giants could consider selling the Brazilian forward instead of allowing him to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer.

Arsenal are among the clubs monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation and are assessing the possibility of making a move. Although there have been no direct discussions between the two clubs, Arsenal’s interest is understood to be genuine.

Plotting surprise move

The Gunners are evaluating several attacking options as they seek to reinforce their frontline. Alongside Vinicius, they are also keeping tabs on Julian Alvarez, Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola.

As Mikel Arteta’s charges aim to defend their league title as well as stretching their perfect record in Europe this coming season, strengthening the left side of Arsenal’s attack remains one of the club’s key priorities.

Leandro Trossard has already completed a move to Besiktas, while reports suggest Arsenal could also entertain offers for Gabriel Martinelli if suitable bids arrive.

Earlier this week, Arsenal bolstered their squad by signing winger Christis Tzolis from Club Brugge.

Are Vinicius Jr’s salary expectations beyond Arsenal’s reach?

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Spanish football expert Terry Gibson explained that the player’s contract demands remain the biggest obstacle.

He said: “Vinicius Jr is currently on 15m Euros a year net.

“Real Madrid have offered him 20m Euros. He wants 30m Euros – just over 550,000 Euros a week net.

“There’s no budging on the contract from Real Madrid or Vinicius. Real Madrid are looking at a potential replacement in Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig. This [contract situation] has been ongoing for 18 months.

“But when you put those figures in the melting pot, it’s hard to imagine Arsenal or anybody in the Premier League matching those sums of money.”

Tzolis impresses

The summer arrival impressed on his first appearance by creating the opening goal for Reiss Nelson in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over MK Dons in the pre-season friendly on Saturday. The Gunners nearly made the perfect start inside the opening minute when Tzolis slipped Nelson through in the penalty area, but goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray produced an important block to deny the forward.

The Greek winger remained a constant threat on the left flank, combining effectively with Riccardo Calafiori before providing another excellent pass for Nelson, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner after 10 minutes to hand Arsenal the lead.

Ethan Nwaneri doubled the advantage with a superb curling strike shortly before half-time. After the interval, Ceadach O’Neill completed the scoring by finishing confidently from Demiane Agustien’s lofted pass.
