Emmanuel Wanyonyi marks dream 1500m debut with victory at Kip Keino Classic
By Luke Oluoch, April 24, 2026World champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi sensationally took down a field of seasoned 1500m stars to clinch the Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour gold on his debut in the race.
After transitioning to the discipline for the seventh edition of the Kip Keino Classic on Friday, April 24, 2026, in Nairobi, the track star mustered a fast and furious display, leading for the final two laps to record a winning time of 3:34.11, a personal best in the new category.
Bidding time
He edged a famed field that comprised Reynold Cheruiyot, who finished second in a time of 3:34.73, while Kyumbe Munguti finished third in 3:34.81.
The race panned out as a ‘wait and observe’ encounter among the competitors bidding their time in the early rounds. It was Wanyonyi who showed grit, pulling into the lead after the pacer left with almost two laps to go.

With the exit of the final pacer after the penultimate lap, Wanyonyi took the lead from the chasing pack, who thought they had cleverly calculated their timing by staying just a step behind the 800m champion for large swathes of the race.
Personal Best
A strong ending that highlighted his trademark 800m photo-finish style was on the cards; the Olympic champion kicked off emphatically to shrug off a late surge from the World Athletics bronze medalist in Tokyo 2025 and cross the line for a personal best and a dream debut in the 1500m race.
The perfect start seals morale-boosting performance for the renowned athlete, who was confirmed in the 1500m discipline instead of his usual two-lap race (800m race). The transition to a longer distance was tipped to be the headline attraction of the meet, and he fittingly lived up to the billing it garnered.
The men’s 10,000 m similarly delivered a strong Kenyan sweep at the top. Kevin Chesang topped proceedings in a time of 28:31.50; Mkulia Kipkandie, who ran a time of 28:36.37, bagged silver, with Charles Kiboino settling for bronze in a time of 8:37.81
