Details of Ksh900M international stadium under construction in Murang’a
By Luke Oluoch, September 23, 2026Stadium infrastructure development in Kenya continues to gather pace ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the revelation of a Ksh900 million stadium as the latest major project in the government’s master plan.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki disclosed on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, the ongoing construction of the modern Ksh900 million Gakoigo Stadium in the Samuru area within Maragua Constituency, a flagship international-standard facility designed to transform local athletic and football development.
According to the deputy president, the state-of-the-art 10,000-capacity facility forms a crucial part of an ambitious national ecosystem featuring 32 stadiums currently being built across Kenya.
The project aligns with the government’s broader vision to empower the youth by promoting grassroots talent and creating sustainable avenues for sports monetisation.
The 10,000-capacity international stadium is rapidly taking shape and will feature a modern complex housing:
- A professional football pitch
- A standard running track equipped with a premium tartan finish
- Modern changing rooms and washrooms for players
- Adequate sanitation facilities for fans
- Covered terraces with canopies to protect spectators from the elements
- Ample parking space to accommodate large crowds during major matchdays
The project comes days after a similar revelation that Nairobi is set to add another major sports and entertainment venue after Talanta Stadium, with a proposed Ksh38.1 billion indoor arena planned at Nairobi Railway City.

Unlike Talanta Stadium, being developed as a large open-air football venue, the proposed arena will will be enclosed and designed to host a range of events, including basketball games, concerts, conferences, exhibitions and cultural shows.
The development is being spearheaded by Zaria Group, co-founded by basketball executive Masai Ujiri, the president and CEO of the Toronto Raptors, alongside Helios Sports & Entertainment Group.
A 10,000-seat arena
At the heart of the project will be a 10,000-capacity indoor arena designed as a multipurpose venue.
Kenya is set to jointly co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations, along with Uganda and Tanzania. The 60,000-seat ultra-modern Raila Odinga Stadium along Ngong Road is expected to be country’s flagship venue during the continental tournament
