‘Come over for hugs if we meet’ – Guardiola tells Man City fans in emotional farewell
In a deeply emotional farewell speech, outgoing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola officially closed the curtain on his legendary ten-year tenure at the club.
The Spanish tactician, who joined City in July 2016, leaves as the most successful manager in club history, having secured a staggering 20 major trophies during his decade-long reign.
‘Hug me if we meet’
Addressing a packed, tearful Etihad crowd, the 55-year-old tactician expressed profound gratitude to the City faithful.
“It has been a huge honour to represent this club,” Guardiola stated. “Every time I made a decision, I always strived to find what was the best decision for this club, and it has always been that way for all these years.”
As he wrapped up his speech, the Spaniard emphasised the unbreakable bond he will always share with the club and its supporters, offering a light-hearted request that drew roaring cheers from the stands.
“Before you head home for some beer or wine, I have one final request,” Guardiola implored. “If you see me on the streets here, or in Europe, or in the United States, or anywhere else over the next few years, and you’re City fans, come over and give me a hug—I am going to need one,” he said.
Stones and Bernardo Silva exit
The night was not just about the mastermind on the touchline; it also marked the heartbreaking departure of two of the club’s greatest, most loyal servants.
Midfield maestro Bernardo Silva and defensive rock John Stones are both leaving the club alongside their manager. Both mainstays were treated to emotional standing ovations and guards of honour from both teams as they subbed off.

When Guardiola subbed off Silva, his captain for the evening, the gaffer was pictured tearing up as the two embraced, with Pep even using his branded T-shirt to wipe away his tears. Shortly after, John Stones received the same heroic send-off, embracing the manager who transformed his career.
Decade of dominance
Guardiola’s departure, which was officially confirmed by the club on Friday, May 22, 2026, draws the curtain on one of the most glittering spells in the history of English top-flight football.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss arrived in Manchester with high expectations and somehow managed to exceed them all. He leaves behind an unrivaled legacy and a trophy cabinet that speaks for itself.
His unprecedented trophy haul during his illustrious tenure included six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, one FIFA Club World Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, and three FA Community Shields.
