Harambee Stars centre-back Collins Sichenje clocked 90 minutes as Charlton Athletic suffered a slim loss to Ipswich Town in an entertaining Championship encounter at The Valley on Wednesday night, April 22, 2026.

Sichenje, who recently returned from injury, was picked to reinforce the defence of Charlton as the home side got off to a dream start, taking the lead just 42 seconds into the match. Tyreece Campbell reacted quickly to a loose ball from Ben Johnson and drove forward before seeing his initial effort saved by Christian Walton. Greg Docherty was quickest to the rebound, slotting home to hand Charlton an early advantage.

Momentum disrupted

Despite the bright opening, Charlton’s momentum was disrupted in the 18th minute when Amari’i Bell was forced off due to injury, with Luke Chambers coming on as his replacement.

Ipswich nearly found an equaliser midway through the first half when Iván Azón created space inside the box, but his attempt drifted wide. At the other end, Charlie Kelman had a chance to double the lead following good build-up play from Docherty, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Walton.

The visitors drew level in the 36th minute through Darnell Furlong, whose well-placed strike beat Thomas Kaminski and found the bottom corner.

Charlton threatened to restore their lead before the break, but Jayden Fevrier’s effort only struck the side netting. Manager Nathan Jones was then forced into another change at half-time, with Campbell unable to continue, and Lyndon Dykes was introduced.

Completing comeback

Ipswich completed the turnaround in the 58th minute after being awarded a penalty. Macaulay Gillesphey was judged to have fouled Furlong in the area, and Jaden Philogene converted from the spot despite Kaminski getting a touch.

Jones responded with several substitutions in search of an equaliser, bringing on Sonny Carey, Harvey Knibbs and Matty Godden. However, Godden picked up an injury late on and had to continue playing as Charlton had already used all their substitutions.

In stoppage time, Kaminski produced an impressive double save to deny Ipswich a third goal, but Charlton were unable to find a late equaliser despite pushing forward in the closing moments.

The defeat leaves Charlton six points above the relegation zone with two matches remaining. Collins Sichenje and the team will be back in action on Saturday, April 25, 2026, for their final home fixture of the season against Hull City.
