UEFA Champions League: Arsenal leading PSG after first-half action in Budapest

Arsenal is currently leading Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League final encounter after the first-half action at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

Kai Havertz’s strike separates the two sides while putting Mikel Arteta’s team on the precipice of history, just 45 minutes away from a historic Champions League crown.

PSG Favourites

The Gunners, who have never won the continental title in the club’s history, could be the new champions of Europe if they hold on to the final half and edge the Parisians, who approached the clash as clear favourites and as the defending champions.

Havertz’s sixth-minute goal was a deserved lead for the Gunners, who in a red, white, and blue-packed arena resplendent with the theme of the finalist crest and colours.

It was, however, a testing first half for the host, who struggled to maintain an attacking rhythm through a frontline led by Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doué, and Khvicha Khvarashtkelia against an Arsenal team resolute at the back.

PSG fightback

The Gunners boast an unbeaten record, seeing them heading to the final, aiming to become the tenth team to bag the competition without tasting defeat, where Luis Enrique’s team, famed for ruthless attacking flair, awaited them.

The French side appeared to struggle while chasing the game, with Bryan Ruiz seeing a short fly across the face of David Raya’s goal before a subsequent chance from a counterattack ended in a similar disappointing fashion with a solid block from Declan Rice.

The opening half ended dramatically with the Gunners almost doubling their lead were it not for a last-ditch block from PSG skipper Marquinhos after Martin Odegaard set Havertz after a delightful exchange from the English team.

The result somehow defies the course of proceedings that many predicted, including famous legends of the game, who made their prediction before the clash.

The star-studded lineup of pundits featured former Barcelona icons Xavi Hernandez and Yaya Toure, alongside English Premier League greats Theo Walcott, John Obi Mikel, and Rio Ferdinand.

Manchester duo torn between

Former Manchester City playmaker David Silva and ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand both predicted a narrow 1-0 victory for Arsenal.

On his part, Barcelona midfield maestro Xavi Hernandez was even more bullish about PSG’s chances, tipping Luis Enrique’s side to secure a comfortable 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile, the legendary lineup also included former Arsenal fan favourites Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla. The iconic attacking duo, famed for their time together in North London, naturally remained loyal to their former club.
