CECAFA Kagame Cup: Vipers SC’s test awaits Gor Mahia in crucial top-table clash

Gor Mahia and Ugandan champions Vipers SC are set to renew their rivalry on the continental stage as the two sides meet in Group F of the CECAFA Kagame Cup clash this Monday, July 27, 2026.
Gor heads into the clash, topping their group following a perfect opener on Friday, July 24, when they outsmarted APR of Rwanda 5-0 in their opening fixture at a packed Amahoro Stadium.

Their real test awaits, however, against the East Africans, who also edged Garde Républicaine FC 3-0 in their opening match to go second in the standings on the same point tally in the group.
Gor will particularly keep a keen eye on former Cranes international Farouk Miya, who is back with the Venoms after stints abroad and across the African continent.
After a decade in Europe, the former Uganda Cranes poster boy made an immediate impact, scoring a brace (including a 17th-minute free-kick) as the eight-time Ugandan champions made a dream start to the regional games.
Other potential threats in their ranks are Yunus Sentamu and Joel Sserunjogi; the former KCCA central midfielder joined the champions to anchor the engine room and provide composure in possession.
Defensively, Brian Torach, a member of the Cranes’ 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad, is also part of the team.
Charles Akonnor’s team, however, are the more confident side in the clash against the champions and aim to become the first team to seal passage to the next rounds with a win.
The record Kenyan champions produced an attacking masterclass against APR and will seek a repeat of the same against David Lavagne’s team.
Akonnor on Gor Mahia approach
There are, however, concerns after Ghanaian coach Akonnor signalled the probability of fielding a different-looking team as part of the technical bench bid to evaluate the squad under competitive conditions.
“The next game (against Vipers) will be approached with different tactics. Every single player in this squad will have a chance to play,” Akonnor told Gor Mahia.com.
“By the time we leave here, we want to have a fair idea of the kind of players we have and who can start at any given game,” he declared while signalling the potential of fielding a different side.
