Carrick: My future at Man Utd is out of my hands

Michael Carrick has admitted his future at Manchester United is out of his hands after securing the club’s return to the Champions League.
The Englishman secured United’s return to Europe’s elite competition next season after winning 10 of his 14 league games in charge, a feat that was sealed with the outsmarting of Liverpool 3-1 on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
Improved fortunes
Following the victory, Carrick stated that he would be involved in the process of choosing the next manager but has since made a detour with the new revelations.
He became the successor in United’s hot seat after Ruben Amorim was sacked on January 6, 2026, but despite emerging as a strong favourite to become the next permanent head coach, he says updates on his future have been scanty.
Nothing has changed
“Clarity is important. The situation, my role, and what it looks like moving forward—nothing has really changed,” Carrick told Sky Sports ahead of facing Sunderland on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

“It is a matter of days ago, we have eyes on finishing the season strongly.I understand the question and the timing of it. From my point of view at this stage, it is about putting “he added.
“As I have said all along, I am calm about it. It will get sorted out when it gets sorted out; it is out of my hands.”
In his interview after the Liverpool clash, the former Spurs midfielder proved cautious when being pressed on his future.
“It is not about what I like or what I do not like. It is not in my control. Everything has gone so well; we know the situation and where we are.”
“I am happy with where we are at the moment, and we still want to get better. Let’s see what happens next. At this moment in time, the permanent job is not something I am thinking about,” he said.
