Manchester United’s interim boss, Michael Carrick, has explained the absence of forward Matheus Cunha, who missed out on the team’s squad for the Brentford game on Monday night, April 27, 2026, at Old Trafford.

Amad Diallo replaced the Brazilian ace in one of two changes in Michael Carrick’s side, as the Red Devils beat Brentford 2-1, courtesy of efforts from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko to boost their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes next season.

Cunha was Manchester United’s matchwinner in the 1-0 triumph against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the last Premier League outing, curling home a beautiful finish from Bruno Fernandes’s cross for his eighth Premier League goal of his debut season as a Red.

Cunha’s absence

“He just had a bit of a sore hip flexor after the Chelsea game. It looked promising in the week, but he didn’t recover in time, as hoped. It’s nothing too serious, but unfortunately, he misses out tonight,” Carrick told Sky Sports.

Since joining from Wolves in the summer transfer window, the attacking midfielder has been a regular feature in the team, starting in 26 of our 33 Premier League fixtures so far.

With Liverpool next up, in an eagerly awaited contest at Old Trafford on Sunday, April 3, 2026, everybody will be keeping their fingers crossed that the 26-year-old will be available again soon.

Fine form

Manchester United’s no.10 had also been in fine form of late, registering four goal contributions in his last six league appearances. However, the Reds made it without his creativity and finishing flair at Old Trafford, against a resolute Brentford squad who still harbour European hopes of their own.

Harry Maguire returned from suspension in the only other change from the 1-0 win against Chelsea, with the England international making his 600th career appearance.

Meanwhile, Lenny Yoro was also back in the matchday squad after recovering from the knock which kept him sidelined last time out.
