Harry Kane nears 100-goal record for Bayern as Englishman cements Ballon d’Or credentials

The striker was involved in the goals at either end of the match as he continued his rich vein of goal-scoring form with the German champions, a run that has placed him among the favourites for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.
Bayern took the lead in the 26th minute when Ismael Saibari’s low cross from the left flank deflected off Kane into the path of Lennart Karl, who tapped home.
The hard-fighting visitors, however, equalised through Maurice Krattenmacher’s superb curling effort, which found the top corner from the edge of the box in the 61st minute.
Kane delivered the decisive moment of the game, blasting a shot past Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof at his near post for the 72nd-minute winner.
The result marked a hard-fought victory for Bayern against a team that had enjoyed a dream start to the league, beating Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach in their historic first Bundesliga season.
Ballon d’Or favourite
The Three Lions skipper’s 99th Bundesliga goal came on his 97th appearance. It was his first of the 2026-27 league campaign as he seeks to replicate his impressive 2025 season, which saw him finish the calendar year on a record-breaking 73 goals.
It was also the Englishman’s 150th goal in 153 matches across all competitions for Bayern since joining from Tottenham in August 2023.
Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, he has scored 10 more goals than any other player across Europe’s ‘big five’ leagues and has averaged a strike every 79 minutes.
He reached 50 Bundesliga goals in just 43 appearances—an all-time record—and is well on track to be the quickest to 100 league goals as well. The current record is held by Dieter Müller, who reached a century of goals in his 129th game.
The 33-year-old is one of the favourites to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded in London in October.
He will contest football’s most prestigious individual award with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, the back-to-back World Golden Boot winner and Real Madrid star, alongside a Barcelona trio of Lamine Yamal, Rodrigo Cascante, and Pau Cubarsi, as well as PSG aces Fabian Ruiz, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Ousmane Dembele, among others.
