Ballon d’Or calling: Harry Kane claims 2025/26 European Golden Shoe

The Bayern Munich and England captain finished clear at the top of the standings with 36 Bundesliga goals, earning 72 points under the award’s weighted ranking system and claiming the prestigious prize for the second time in his career.
Kane’s tally matched the figure that earned him his first Golden Shoe in 2023/24 and left his closest rivals trailing.
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland finished second with 27 Premier League goals, earning 54 points, while Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé took third with 25 La Liga goals for 50 points.
The England skipper’s dominance was rarely threatened as he maintained a scoring rate of more than a goal per game across 31 league appearances.
A remarkable campaign
The Golden Shoe capped a remarkable campaign for the 32-year-old striker.
In addition to his individual honour, Kane helped Bayern secure a second consecutive Bundesliga title and scored a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final as the Bavarians lifted the German Cup.
Across all competitions, he scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern, the highest total by any player in Europe, while adding another 12 goals for England.
Six of those goals came at the 2026 World Cup, where the Three Lions finished third.
The Golden Shoe trophy is scheduled to be presented to Kane on August 19 at the Bayern Museum inside the Allianz Arena.
Kane now joins an exclusive group of multiple Golden Shoe winners, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo having claimed the award more times.
Ballon d’Or ambitions gather pace
The timing of Kane’s latest individual honour could hardly be better for his Ballon d’Or ambitions.
Bookmakers currently list him among the leading contenders, with some markets making him the outright favourite following his impressive club campaign and World Cup performances.
Kane leads a star-studded group of contenders that includes Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé ahead of the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London in October.
Should Kane go on to claim the Ballon d’Or later this year, he would become only the fifth player in history to win both the European Golden Shoe and the Ballon d’Or in the same year.
Only four players have previously achieved the feat: Gerd Müller in 1970, Ronaldo Nazário in 1997, Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 and 2014, and Lionel Messi in 2010, 2012 and 2019.
Only seven players have won both awards at some point in their careers, making the same-year combination one of football’s rarest individual achievements.
Messi was the most recent player to accomplish the double in 2019.
Why Kane has a strong Ballon d’Or case
Kane’s numbers provide the foundation for his strongest Ballon d’Or case yet.
His 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country represent the most prolific output by any player worldwide this calendar year, combining clinical finishing with creative playmaking.
Domestically, he delivered goals, consistency and silverware, while his leadership of England to their best World Cup finish in 60 years has further strengthened his credentials.
He also became England’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup, adding another significant milestone to an already impressive campaign.
At an age when many strikers begin to decline, Kane continues to produce at an elite level, demonstrating the finishing, leadership and adaptability that have made him one of the most dependable forwards in world football.
There are, however, aspects of his campaign that critics could point to, including quieter moments during the Champions League knockout stages and England’s World Cup semi-final.
Even so, Kane’s overall body of work goals, trophies, longevity, leadership and impact gives him a compelling case for football’s most prestigious individual prize.
A second European Golden Shoe is therefore more than a statistical triumph for Kane. It is further evidence that the former Tottenham forward remains one of the most clinical and reliable centre-forwards in world football.
