Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has conveyed gratitude to his teammates after equalling the all-time single-season assist record during an entertaining 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

By registering his 20th assist of the campaign, the inspirational captain matched the legendary milestone jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Fernandes could have easily claimed the outright record during the clash had a wasteful Bryan Mbeumo converted a neatly laid pass earlier in the game. Instead, the Cameroonian’s powerful effort from the resulting chance rattled off the crossbar.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the final whistle, Bruno acknowledged the significance of the milestone, warmly hailing his teammates’ efforts in helping him attain the historic feat.

Important

“Everyone knew that [the assist record] was important. They were trying everything they could to score from my passes. I’m very happy, but more than that, I’m happy for the win,” he said.

Outstanding season

The Portuguese playmaker has been Manchester United’s undisputed brightest spot this season, racking up staggering numbers in chance creation and overall tactical impact. His stellar performances have led many pundits to tout him as the most formidable candidate for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

While he already bagged the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Player of the Year award last week, the skipper insists his core focus remains on guiding the club to collective silverware rather than collecting individual accolades. Nevertheless, Bruno is keeping his fingers crossed as he eyes becoming the outright holder of the Premier League record in the final match of the season.

Record in sight

“I want collective awards more than anything. But I’m grateful that people think I should be the player of the season. I turned 20 today. Let’s see if I do in the final game. But I am happy no matter what,” Fernandes added.

Manchester United will travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, May 24, 2026, where the 31-year-old maestro will have one final ninety-minute window to complete his record-breaking feat.
