Emmanuel Wanyonyi quashes claims of going for Rudisha’s 14-year old 800m record in Rabat
By Luke Oluoch, May 30, 2026Reigning world 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi has downplayed talk of a world record attempt ahead of his highly anticipated two-lap season debut at the Moroccan leg of the Diamond League.
The entry of the global gold medallist on the Sunday, May 31, 2026, race had sparked widespread speculation that David Rudisha’s legendary 2012 world record of 1:40.91 could be under threat.
However, speaking ahead of his first 800m outing since capturing global gold in Tokyo in September 2025, the athlete urged calm, insisting his primary focus is simply testing his fitness.

“For me, I am just happy to be back here for the Diamond League. I am ready for tomorrow. This will be my season opener, so I am here to run and see how my body responds. I do not know how fast I can go; I will just try to win the race,” Wanyonyi stated on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Kip Keino’s triumph
Wanyonyi has already demonstrated remarkable range and speed this year, having dropped a blistering 1500m personal best of 3:34.11 at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on April 24, 2026, where he stunned a host of other African competitors.
Despite that flashing fitness, the rising star denied assertions that he would be out to hunt down Rudisha’s 14-year-old mark.
“I am not thinking about the world records. What I can say is that I want to achieve something special in this discipline. For now, I am completely focused on the 800m, and I know I still have time to improve my personal best,” he explained.
Facing a star-studded lineup on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at 10:46 PM, Wanyonyi’s measured approach sets the stage for a tactical masterclass rather than an outright time trial, as Kenya’s brightest middle-distance star launches his 2026 international campaign.
