Akonnor reveals secret strategy behind Gor Mahia’s Mashemeji Derby victory over AFC Leopards

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has lauded the performance that saw the club claim bragging rights in the 99th Mashemeji Derby, securing crucial points to inch closer to a record league title.

The Premier League champions’ boss stated that the team did their homework and were the superior side throughout the match.

Akonnor also hailed his team’s belief, even after failing to capitalise on a dominant first half.

Good performance and belief

“We studied our opponent thoroughly and strategised well. You could see in the first half that we controlled and dominated them. That is exactly what we planned, and it worked. The boys did very well; I must salute them for the performance, not just the win,” he explained.

The Ghanaian tactician also attributed the victory to a spirit of resilience, praising how his players remained patient and determined until the late breakthrough.

“They stayed confident even when we did not find the net in the first half. They stuck to the plan, and in the end, we were rewarded,” he added.

“We executed everything we wanted to on the field. The goal may have had an element of luck, but it came after we created numerous chances—and that’s what happens when you work hard,” he explained.

His remarks come as his nemesis, AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani, decried a bad day in office following the heartbreaking loss to their arch rivals and championship contenders.

Not over

“It was a bad day for us in the office: things didn’t work out, and it is painful to lose,” he stated.

Despite the setback, the gaffer remains optimistic about their title prospects, even while admitting that their fate is no longer in their own hands.

“We still have games to play, and if Gor can lose and we win our games, we stand a chance,” he explained.

Overall, the defeat dealt a major title blow to Ingwe, who had seen a spell of winning outcomes cut Gor’s lead, once a ten-point cushion, to only three points ahead of the crucial derby.
