Akonnor reveals Gor Mahia’s strategy that has left opponents struggling to cope

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has opened up on a key facet of his team’s play that has been ticking the boxes in the ongoing FKF Premier League campaign.

Speaking after the 3-0 win over KCB on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Nyayo National Stadium, Akonnor lauded his charges for another dominant display, which saw the log leaders restore their six-point advantage at the helm of the standings.

A first-half blitz, inspired by Enoch Morrison’s opener, saw K’Ogalo score three goals and leave Robert Matano’s charges searching for answers after being caught off guard.

Aggressive

“We intend to be aggressive in our game plan, and we did it well. The manner in which we used our spaces in wider areas was very exciting. I was happy and excited with how we played,” he stated.

“We assess our opponents before every game and identify their strengths. For us, when we gain possession, we are always looking to ambush our opponents when they are not prepared, and the strategy has been working for us,” he added.

With the win, Gor Mahia extended their fine league run, taking their season haul to 46 points and moving six points clear at the summit.

Morrison found the opener with a long-range strike to open the floodgates in the 24th minute.

The goal sparked a rampant first half for the hosts, with the visitors conceding a second as Shariff Musa got on the scoresheet from close range after being played through by Samuel Kapen.

Bankers’ vaults raided

The first-half raid against Robert Matano’s boys saw the bankers’ defense breached for the third time just before the break. Kapen, this time, accepted favours from Shariff to send in a low drive that beat Boniface Munyasia in goal, putting Akonnor’s charges 3-0 up.

The former City Stars man went close to a double in the second half after his rasping shot whistled off the crossbar as Gor exerted dominance against their rivals.

Gor Mahia have now gone 11 league games unbeaten in the FKF Premier League with the win over KCB, marking a new high of six consecutive league wins under the Ghanaian gaffer.
