Why Abud Omar was involved in heated exchange with Harambee Stars kit manager in Eritrea draw
By Joel Masibo, September 27, 2026Harambee Stars captain Abud Omar was involved in a heated exchange with members of the team’s management after handing his match-worn jersey to a fan following Kenya’s 1-1 draw against Eritrea at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
Omar, who started the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifier at left-back and captained Benni McCarthy’s side, approached supporters after the final whistle and gave his player-issued shirt to one of the fans.
The gesture was met with excitement from the recipient but reportedly triggered a confrontation involving the team’s kit manager and an official from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
According to footage circulating on social media, the officials confronted Omar over the decision, resulting in a tense exchange between the captain and the team representatives.
The incident came shortly after Kenya had salvaged a point against Eritrea, with Ryan Ogam scoring the equaliser after Nahom Girmai Netabay had put the visitors ahead. Kenya dominated much of the match but had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Why the jersey became an issue
The dispute reportedly centred on the management of Harambee Stars’ playing kits.
The national team does not have a regular programme through which players are allowed to give their match jerseys to supporters. Instead, players are understood to be required to return their match-issued kits after matches for cleaning, reuse and management ahead of subsequent fixtures.
That policy becomes particularly significant when the team has a limited supply of playing kits, meaning a shirt given away after one match could leave the equipment team with fewer available jerseys for future assignments.
The confrontation therefore appeared to be less about the fan receiving a souvenir and more about adherence to the team’s kit-management arrangements.
Omar’s decision nevertheless provided one of the memorable moments after a frustrating evening for the hosts, as the captain chose to reward a supporter despite the team’s internal kit procedures.
Omar’s gesture wins attention
The Harambee Stars captain has previously been associated with giving supporters special access to team jerseys.
In September 2025, Omar presented musician King Kaka with a Harambee Stars shirt signed by members of the national team following Kenya’s 5-0 victory over Seychelles.
The latest incident, however, was different because it involved a match-issued shirt and occurred immediately after an official competitive fixture.
Omar remains one of the experienced figures in the current Harambee Stars squad. FKF included the defender in the provisional squad for the opening AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Eritrea and Guinea, with McCarthy selecting him among his defender.
The 1-1 draw left Kenya with a point from their opening Group D qualifier, although the country is already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON finals as one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The post-match confrontation over Omar’s jersey has since added another talking point to an already eventful Harambee Stars campaign, with the incident highlighting the tension that can arise between players’ interactions with supporters and the team’s operational requirements.
