WAFCON Tuesday fixtures: Tanzania, Burkina Faso and South Africa battle for survival in must-win clashes

Former champions South Africa will face Burkina Faso, while Tanzania take on Côte d’Ivoire, with all four teams still in contention for a place in the knockout stage. Both matches kick off simultaneously at 11:00 pm Kenyan time.
After two rounds of matches, Côte d’Ivoire lead the group with four points following a 4-1 victory over Burkina Faso and a 2-2 draw with South Africa.
Burkina Faso and Tanzania each have three points, while Banyana Banyana sit bottom with just one point after losing 2-1 to Tanzania before drawing with the Ivorians.
With only the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals, Tuesday’s fixtures promise a tense finish to Group B.
South Africa seek to keep quarter-final hopes alive
South Africa head into their final group match knowing victory is essential to remain in contention for the knockout stage.
Desiree Ellis’ side showed resilience in their last outing by coming from behind to earn a point against Côte d’Ivoire, with Hildah Magaia scoring a late equaliser.
However, a defeat to Tanzania in their opening match and defensive lapses throughout the tournament have left Banyana Banyana with little margin for error.
Even if they beat Burkina Faso, South Africa’s qualification hopes could still depend on the outcome of the match between Tanzania and Côte d’Ivoire.
Burkina Faso and Tanzania eye historic qualification
Burkina Faso will be full of confidence after recording their first-ever WAFCON victory, beating Tanzania 2-1 thanks to goals from Kabré and captain Balkissa Sawadogo. Another positive result would move them closer to a historic first appearance in the quarter-finals.
Tanzania are also chasing history after stunning South Africa in their opening match. The Twiga Stars know a victory over Côte d’Ivoire would give them a strong chance of securing a maiden place in the knockout rounds.
Côte d’Ivoire, meanwhile, remain unbeaten after collecting four points from their opening two matches. A draw would be enough to secure qualification, but they will be wary of a Tanzania side that has already shown it can upset one of the tournament favourites.
The Group B fixtures will be played simultaneously, with Burkina Faso facing South Africa at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, while Tanzania meet Côte d’Ivoire at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. Both matches kick off at 11:00 pm Kenyan time.
The expanded 16-team tournament has already produced several surprises. Kenya and Senegal have been eliminated from Group A, Egypt have exited from Group C, while tournament debutants Cape Verde have also bowed out after failing to progress from Group D.
With quarter-final places still on the line, Tuesday night’s matches are expected to deliver another thrilling chapter in Morocco as Tanzania, Burkina Faso and South Africa battle to keep their WAFCON dreams alive.
