WAFCON 2026: Records that could be broken in Morocco

With the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 fast approaching, several long-standing milestones could be rewritten as Africa’s finest prepare for another chapter in the tournament’s history.
From individual achievements to team records, the 14th edition of the continental showpiece presents an opportunity for some of the game’s biggest names to set new benchmarks.
Aboudi Onguéné chasing record eighth appearance
Cameroon captain Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné is on the verge of making history. Should she feature in her country’s opening match against Mali at Larbi Zaouli Stadium on July 29, she will become the first player to compete in eight WAFCON final tournaments.
The experienced forward would move ahead of Nigerian legend Ebi Onome, who represented her country at seven editions of the competition.
Nigerian duo targeting another title
Super Falcons veterans Francisca Ordega and Osinachi Ohale already share the distinction of being the competition’s most successful players, having lifted the trophy five times.
Nigeria’s continued dominance means the pair could extend that remarkable achievement by claiming a sixth continental crown in Morocco, further strengthening their place among Africa’s football greats.
Fastest goal under threat
Tunisia’s Mariem Houij currently owns the record for the quickest goal in WAFCON history after finding the net just 17 seconds into a match against Togo during the 2022 tournament.
With 413 players expected to participate in the expanded 2026 competition, there will be plenty of opportunities for someone to eclipse that lightning-fast strike.
Nkwocha’s incredible scoring feat still stands
One of the toughest records to beat belongs to Nigerian icon Perpetua Nkwocha, who scored an astonishing 11 goals during the 2010 edition.
Her unforgettable campaign featured two hat-tricks, one against Mali in the group stage and another versus Cameroon in the semifinals, as she inspired Nigeria to the title. More than a decade and a half later, no player has managed to match her extraordinary scoring exploits in a single tournament.
Tournament goal record could rise again
The 2024 edition in Morocco produced the highest number of goals ever recorded in the competition, with 66 scored throughout the tournament.
That mark could soon become history as WAFCON expands to 16 teams for the first time in 2026. The larger field brings more matches, increasing the likelihood of a new overall goals record being established.
