WAFCON 2026 Saturday fixture: Bitter rivals Morocco and Algeria clash in third-place play-off
By Joel Masibo, August 15, 2026Morocco and Algeria will meet in a highly anticipated North African derby with a bronze medal on the line as both sides look to end their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaigns on a positive note on Saturday, August 16, 2026, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
The neighbouring nations were both eliminated in the semifinals, ending their hopes of reaching the final. However, they still have an opportunity to finish on the podium in what promises to be an emotional final chapter to their campaigns.
For hosts Morocco, the third-place encounter offers a chance to put the disappointment of their semifinal exit behind them. The Atlas Lionesses had enjoyed an impressive run before Cameroon held them to a goalless draw and eventually eliminated them 3-1 on penalties.
Morocco coach Jorge Vidal wants his players to respond positively and close the tournament with a victory.
“We want to finish in the best possible way, with a victory,” he explained at a press conference.
The Spanish tactician also praised the mentality within his squad and believes the players are determined to end the competition with something to celebrate.
“My players are very strong mentally. They want to finish the competition with a win,” he added.
A derby with plenty at stake
Morocco and Algeria are no strangers to one another, having already crossed paths during the group stage. Morocco won that encounter 1-0, but the circumstances will be completely different this time, with a place on the podium at stake.
Vidal is hoping his team can deliver another memorable moment for the supporters who have backed them throughout the tournament.
“We are convinced that the players will give everything to finish with a medal, to please all our fans,” said Vidal.
Algeria, meanwhile, will enter the contest with an equally strong desire to claim bronze. Head coach Farid Benstiti is determined not to allow the opportunity to secure a medal pass his team by following their historic campaign.
“We cannot relinquish this third place,” affirmed the Algerian coach. “We will respect the competition and give it our all.”
The Fennecs have already achieved a landmark accomplishment by securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Their performance has exceeded expectations, but the team now has its sights on adding a continental medal to its achievements.
Midfielder Lina Boussaha highlighted the significance of the occasion for Algerian women’s football.
“What will motivate us tomorrow is simply to make history for the Algerian women’s team,” explained Lina Boussaha. “Bringing a medal home to the people, this bronze medal, is no small thing.
Algeria treating bronze-medal game as a final
Algeria’s players are refusing to view the third-place playoff as a consolation match. Having reached the latter stages of the competition, they see the encounter as another opportunity to make history.
“We are simply approaching this match as a final. It’s a third-place match, but it’s a final. And we still have something to gain,” the midfielder insisted.
Both teams therefore have plenty of motivation heading into the contest, with Morocco seeking to reward its home supporters and Algeria aiming to cap a historic tournament with its first WAFCON medal.
A historic North African showdown
The fixture will mark the first occasion on which two North African nations have met in a medal match at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Morocco will also become only the second host nation to contest the third-place playoff. South Africa previously achieved the feat in 2010, when Banyana Banyana defeated Cameroon 2-0.
With a bronze medal awaiting the winner, the Morocco-Algeria derby promises to provide a fitting conclusion to the tournament campaigns of two teams that have played a significant role in highlighting the continued rise of women’s football in North Africa.
