Wet Sunday ahead: Heavy rainfall expected across key regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a 24-hour rainfall forecast covering Sunday, February 22, to Monday, February 23, 2026.
In a statement on X, the agency highlighted that rainfall is expected to range from moderate to heavy, with isolated very heavy downpours in some areas.
“Rainfall amounts are expected to range from moderate to heavy, with isolated very heavy (severe) rainfall in some areas,”KMD wrote.
The agency noted that parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, including Nairobi, and the South-Eastern Lowlands are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with totals of 50 millimetres or more.
Moderate to heavy rainfall, ranging from 20 to 50 millimetres, is forecast over Western Kenya and adjoining areas.
Parts of the South Coast and nearby inland regions may see moderate rainfall of 5 to 20 millimetres, while northern and northeastern counties are likely to remain mostly dry.
Potential risks and impacts
According to the Met Department, the rainfall could cause localised flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas, reduce visibility, create slippery road conditions, and raise river levels in flood-prone catchments.
The agency emphasised that residents should avoid crossing rivers or roads that are submerged or showing signs of flooding.
“Residents in affected areas are advised to remain alert, avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, and continue to follow updates issued by the,”KMD stated.

Nairobi is expected to experience showers with occasional thunderstorms throughout the day, while Kericho, Kisumu, and Kakamega will see rainfall interspersed with sunny intervals.
In the Central Highlands, towns such as Nyeri, Murang’a, and Kiambu are likely to receive moderate to heavy showers, especially in the afternoon.
Coastal cities including Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi, and Kwale may experience scattered showers, particularly in the afternoon, though partly cloudy skies are expected at other times.
In the South-Eastern Lowlands, areas such as Machakos, Kitui, and Kajiado are forecast to receive intermittent rainfall with thunderstorms in isolated locations.
Northern and northeastern counties, including Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, are expected to remain largely dry, with partly cloudy skies prevailing. However, strong southeasterly winds of over 25 knots are likely over Marsabit and Turkana counties, which could affect outdoor activities and travel.
