Sunday weather: Kenya Met predicts rain, low temperatures and strong winds across regions
By Dan Kauna, August 9, 2026Kenyans should prepare for a mix of cold mornings, rain and strong winds across different parts of the country on Sunday, August 9, 2026. This is according to the daily forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Residents in the central highlands and surrounding areas will deal with chilly conditions throughout the day.
In its advisory, the Met Department notes that “Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Makueni Counties.”
Nairobi will experience temperatures between 12°C and 24°C, while Nyandarua County will record low temperatures dropping to 8°C.
Rainfall forecast in western Kenya and coastal regions
Rainfall is expected across 27 counties covering western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the central highlands and the coastal strip.
The region includes Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Narok, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans Nzoia, Vihiga, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bomet, Nandi, West Pokot, Baringo, Nakuru, Nyamira, Kisii, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Kilifi, Mombasa and Lamu counties.
Areas including Kericho, Kakamega, Bungoma and Uasin Gishu will see afternoon showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Kericho recorded the highest rainfall in the country over the previous 24 hours, hitting nearly 29 millimetres.
Down at the coast, Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi will start with light morning showers before sunny breaks take over during the afternoon. Daytime temperatures in Mombasa and Kwale will reach 28°C, while Kilifi will reach 29°C.
High temperatures and strong winds in northern areas
In contrast to the chilly central region, northern Kenya will experience high daytime heat alongside strong wind gusts.
The weather department warned that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties.”
Turkana County will record the highest temperature in the country at 36°C, followed by Mandera at 35°C, Garissa at 34°C and Wajir at 33°C. Marsabit will see maximum temperatures of 26°C with minimums dropping to 14°C, while Tana River will hit highs of 31°C.
