Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has criticised a section of ODM members for what he described as baseless attacks on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

His remarks come after jubilant cheers greeted the retired president as he attended the burial service of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Salasya said the reception for Uhuru was wonderful, and said the cheers from the crowd showed how much people still respect him.

He told ODM members to leave Uhuru alone, adding that they were attacking him for no reason and that they must be idle if attacking the retired Head of State was their main activity.

“What a wonderful reception in Lugari na nikawaambia watu wa ODM waachane na Uhuru kama wamekosa kazi ya kufanya 😂 😆 😂 😆. They are very idle attacking Uhuru for no reason.”

Cheers

Uhuru arrived at the funeral grounds shortly after 11:30 am, during an ongoing sermon. His presence sparked emotional reactions, with sections of the crowd rising to their feet as loud cheers and ululations filled the air. The momentary excitement prompted the preacher to pause briefly to allow the retired Head of State to take his seat before the service continued.

In a statement shared online, the Office of the Fourth President confirmed his attendance, noting that he had joined family, friends, and leaders in paying final respects to the late Cyrus Jirongo.

“His Excellency President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta attends the burial ceremony of former Lugari MP Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo in Lumakanda, Kakamega County,” the post read.

Several senior political leaders were also present to honour the late politician. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi joined the family and mourners in paying tribute to Jirongo’s legacy. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who had been closely involved in the funeral arrangements and condolence visits, was also in attendance alongside other leaders from Western Kenya.

Cyrus Jirongo passed away on December 13, 2025, following a tragic road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Karai in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
