Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has promised to protect the wealth of the late former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo and ensure his family is cared for, as thousands gathered for the burial ceremony in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Speaking at the funeral service, Sakaja emphasised that as the governor of Nairobi County, he would personally ensure that no one would interfere with Jirongo’s wealth or take advantage of the family during this difficult time.

“Mimi kama governor wa Nairobi County, mali ya CJ haitaguswa na mtu,” Sakaja stated.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi made an emotional appeal for unity and support for Jirongo’s children.

He cautioned against waiting until after the funeral to speak up, emphasising the urgency of helping the family now.

Isije wakati mtu amekufa ndio watu wanasimama kuongea, baada ya mazishi hii mahema yote itatolewa. Ndugu zangu tumekubaliana hawa watoto wamewachwa nyuma tushikane tufanye kitu tutafanya tuhakikishe wataishi maisha mazuri,” Sudi stated.

Calls for investigations

The burial comes amid mounting calls for a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death. The 64‑year‑old died on December 13, 2025, after his vehicle was involved in a head‑on crash with a passenger bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai in Naivasha. Preliminary autopsy and forensic reports confirmed that he died from severe blunt force trauma resulting from the crash.

Despite official findings, family members and private investigators have cast doubt on aspects of the crash, arguing that CCTV footage suggests there may have been other unidentified people in the car at the time of the accident. This has fueled speculation and public debate, with some leaders and mourners insisting that all unanswered questions be addressed.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has pledged that the police will pursue a thorough investigation and leave no stone unturned in establishing what happened. He urged the public to avoid speculation, saying forensic work is already underway.
