Rain, cool winds and sunny spells expected across Kenya on Monday, August 24

Kenyans across several counties should prepare for a mix of light rains, chilly overcast skies, and strong winds on August 24, 2026.

According to the daily bulletin issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department, valid from 9:00 pm tonight to 9:00 pm tomorrow, weather conditions will vary widely across the country.

Light rains and chilly conditions

The latest forecast indicates that rainfall is expected in some parts of 16 counties. These areas include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisumu, Nyamira, Migori, Kisii, Narok, and Nyandarua.

Most of these regions will start the day with sunny intervals before experiencing afternoon showers and scattered thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, residents in 15 counties can look forward to intermittent cool and cloudy conditions. In the department’s terminology guide, intermittent describes weather that “starts and stops, comes and goes”.

Counties facing this chilly morning outlook include Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, Laikipia, Nyandarua, Taita Taveta, and Marsabit.

Temperatures will drop significantly in higher elevations. Nyandarua will record the coldest weather in the nation, with temperatures falling to 9°C before rising to a maximum of 22°C.

Nairobi will see temperatures ranging between 12°C and 24°C, opening with night showers before giving way to cloudy mornings and sunny afternoons. At the other end of the scale, Mandera will hit a high of 37°C, while Turkana follows closely at 36°C.

Strong winds and regional weather

Wind speeds are set to pick up significantly across northern, eastern, and coastal sectors. Met Department forecasters warn of “strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of” 12 counties.

The affected regions comprise Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Kitui, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu.

Down at the coast, Mombasa will record temperatures between 23°C and 29°C, with light morning showers clearing up for a sunny afternoon. Western Kenya centres like Kisumu and Kakamega will see maximum temperatures of 29°C and 27°C respectively, alongside afternoon showers.

The department notes that where showers occur over few places, rainfall will cover less than 33 percent of that specific region. Daylength across the country will see sunrise in Nairobi at 6:32 am and sunset at 6:37 pm, while Kisumu sees sunrise at 6:40 am and sunset at 6:46 pm.
