Police destroy over 3K litres of Kangara as brewers flee in Nandi County

Police officers from Nandi South Sub-County have destroyed at least three thousand and ten litres of Kangara, while the key persons of interest linked to the illicit brews are reported to have escaped.
In a post on the National Police Service official X account on Saturday, January 10, 2026, the officers confirmed that the operation was conducted in four villages.
According to the officers, the operation was conducted in Kapkerker Location, with the operation targeting Kipsigak, Baibai, Chepsis, and Kipkurui villages.
“Police officers from the Nandi South Sub-County yesterday conducted an operation against illicit alcohol in Kapkerer Location. The operation targeted Kipsigak, Baibai, Chepsis, and Kipkurui villages,” NPS said.
At the time of the raid, the officers confirmed that the team dismantled brewing apparatus found concealed in bushes, along rivers, and within forested areas.
In addition, the officers recovered at least sixty litres of Chang’aa from a residential property and secured it as evidence.
“During the raid, officers destroyed a total of 3,010 litres of Kangara and dismantled brewing apparatus found concealed in bushes, along rivers, and within forested areas. Additionally, 60 litres of Chang’aa were recovered from a residential property and secured as evidence,” NPS added.
On the other hand, police confirmed that key persons of interest fled the scene upon noticing the police presence.
“Suspected brewers fled the scene upon noticing the police presence. Investigations are proceeding at full speed to apprehend the suspects. The National Police Service remains steadfast in its resolve to combat illicit alcohol and to safeguard public health and safety,” NPS noted.
“Members of the public are urged to continue cooperating with the police by providing information on drug- and alcohol-related activities,” NPS stated.

Busia crackdown
The Nandi incident closely follows a crackdown in Busia County, where police officers arrested one woman in possession of at least eighty litres of illicit brew at her homestead.
In a post on the National Police Service Official X account on Friday, January 9, 2025, the officers further confirmed that the team recovered at least one thousand seven hundred and twenty-five litres of Kangara.
According to the officers, the operation led by County Commander Mr Abdille Ahmed was conducted in the Nasewa area of Busia County.
“Yesterday, officers from Busia Police Station, led by County Commander Mr Abdille Ahmed, CP, conducted a targeted operation against illicit alcohol in the Nasewa area,” NPS said.
At the time of the operation, the officers confirmed that the key person of interest was found in possession of approximately 80 litres of a substance believed to be Chang’aa at her homestead.
At the same time, the officers swiftly moved to destroy the hundreds of litres of Kangara recovered during the operation.
“During the operation, one suspect was arrested after she was found in possession of approximately 80 litres of a substance believed to be Chang’aa at her homestead. In addition, 1,725 litres of Kangara were recovered and subsequently destroyed,” NPS stated.
On the other hand, the officers confirmed that the person of interest was later escorted to Busia Police Station and is due to be arraigned in court.
“The suspect was escorted to Busia Police Station and is due to be arraigned in court. The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to serving and protecting the public,” NPS added.
