Nairobi Water responds to claims that Thika Road residents are receiving dirty water
By Valerian Khakayi, August 10, 2026The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has responded to concerns over the quality of water supplied to some residents in Nairobi after complaints emerged online.
The concerns were raised by Kenyans who shared photos and posts online claiming that some households were receiving dirty or discoloured water from their taps.
Some of the reports referenced residents along Thika Road, while other posts linked the same water quality concerns to Nairobi West. The different claims prompted questions about the actual location where the reported water issue occurred.
In a statement on Monday, August 10,2026, Nairobi Water thanked residents for remaining vigilant and promptly reporting concerns about water quality, saying such reports help the company monitor the safety of water supplied to Nairobi households.
However, Nairobi Water raised concerns about the photo being used to support the reports, noting that the same image was being shared online in reference to three different locations.
“We sincerely thank Nairobi residents for their vigilance and promptly reporting concerns about water quality. Your diligence helps us ensure safe and clean water for all,” the company said.
“We have noted that the same photo is currently being shared online in reference to three different locations.”

Causes of the dirty water
The utility company said its technical team had reviewed the situation and confirmed that there were no ongoing works in the areas mentioned that could result in contamination at the time of its response.
“Our technical team has confirmed that there are no ongoing works in these areas that could result in contamination at this time,” Nairobi Water said.
Despite the clarification, the company said it was still seeking more information to establish the exact location where the water shown in the circulating image was collected adding that it had reached out to the customer who shared the original post and was awaiting a response.
The company explained that confirmation of the exact location or estate would allow its response teams to visit the area, conduct the necessary checks and take appropriate action if a water quality problem is confirmed.

“We have reached out and are awaiting a response from the customer who shared the original post. This will confirm the exact location or estate so that our response teams can investigate and take necessary action,” the company said.
Nairobi Water further urged residents experiencing water quality concerns can contact Nairobi Water through its toll-free line 0800724366 for assistance and follow-up.
“For any water quality concerns, reach out to us on the toll-free line 0800724366,” Nairobi Water added.
