Nairobi Water begins crackdown on illegal connections in Utawala and Mihango
By Valerian Khakayi, June 10, 2026Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) has launched an enforcement exercise targeting illegal and unmetered water and sewer connections in Utawala and Mihango following the expiry of a grace period given to residents to regularise their services.
In an update issued on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the utility provider said the operation, led by the Upper Embakasi team and the regional manager, is aimed at ensuring compliance with water connection requirements and curbing unauthorised usage within the service area.
“Following the lapse of the grace period issued to Utawala and Mihango residents to regularise their water and sewer connections , our team from Upper Embakasi, led by the Regional Manager, has begun an enforcement exercise to disconnect all unmetered and illegal connections,” Nairobi Water said.
According to Nairobi Water, the grace period that had been issued to residents in the affected areas has now lapsed. As a result, the company has begun disconnecting all unmetered and illegal water and sewer connections.
The enforcement exercise is expected to continue until full compliance is achieved, with teams already on the ground carrying out inspections and disconnections.

Nairobi Water has also urged all customers in Utawala and Mihango to take immediate action and ensure their connections are properly registered and metered to avoid disruptions in service.
Customers who have not yet regularised their water and sewer connections are encouraged to apply through the official portal.
“All customers are encouraged to apply for water and sewer connections on http://portal.nairobiwater.co.ke . You can also visit our offices located at Shujaa mall, Kayole ,Spine road. take immediate action to avoid inconvenience and visit our offices or contact us for assistance,” Nairobi Water urged.

Warning to illegal connectors
The operation comes weeks after the company issued a final notice to residents of Utawala and Mihango in Nairobi’s Upper Embakasi region to regularise unmetered water and sewer connections before the expiry of a 21-day grace period on May 28, 2026.
In a public notice dated May 27, the utility company said it has been conducting a compliance and metering exercise in the two estates as part of efforts to improve service delivery and curb illegal water use.
“Nairobi Water is undertaking a compliance and metering exercise in Utawala & Mihango areas. All customers with unmetered connections are granted a 21-day grace period ending 28th May 2026 to regularise their water and/or sewer connections,” the notice reads.

The company warned that customers who fail to regularise their water and sewer connections before the deadline risk enforcement action, including penalties, disconnections and additional charges.
According to the notice, illegal domestic water connections will attract a penalty of Ksh30,000, while commercial premises will face fines of up to Ksh100,000, in addition to estimated water consumption charges backdated to October 2024.
“Failure to comply within the grace period will attract enforcement action without further notice, including illegal water connection penalties: Kshs. 30,000 (Domestic) or Kshs. 100,000 (Commercial) plus estimated water consumption charges from October 2024 to date,” the notice reads.
Nairobi Water further warned that sewer service disconnections, where applicable, will attract an additional Ksh15,000 charge.
“Disconnection at the Mains: Kshs. 5,000 reconnection fee plus double deposit. Sewer Service Disconnection: Kshs. 15,000 where applicable,” Nairobi water warned.
