MP Johana Ng’eno’s last moments, including ride aboard a chopper

Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno spent his final hours moving between community work and public events, according to posts shared on his social media pages.

The MP is among six individuals who died in a helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Around five hours before the helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday, February 28, 2026, he joined families and a search and rescue team at Mara Rianta to support efforts to retrieve the bodies of two young men whose vehicle was swept away by floods.

The MP shared a video inside a chopper flying above a flooded river while trying to help in the rescue mission.

“This morning, I joined the families of the late Snr Chief ole Rurumo and Ole Kipembeu and the search and rescue team at Mara Rianta,” he said, adding that his heart went out to the affected families.

In the same message, the lawmaker urged caution during the rainy season and warned about flooded rivers and roads.

“I also urge the public to remain vigilant during this rainy season, particularly around flooded rivers and roads,” he said, calling on people to prioritise safety in their communities.

He described the moment as painful and uncertain for the families of the two young men, saying he stood with them as the search continued.

Last celebration

Around four hours before the incident, Ng’eno posted that he had arrived in Endebes to attend a celebration.

“I have just arrived at Kapkugo, Tulwop Kony, Endebes, to join friends, fans, and fellow leaders in celebrating Artist Kim Kim’s remarkable 35th anniversary in the music industry,” he wrote.

The post showed he was continuing with public duties and engagements shortly before the events that followed later in the day.

Reactions from leaders

Following the helicopter crash that occurred earlier in the day, leaders began sharing messages of grief. Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka was among the first to speak.

He noted that among those on board was Ngeno, whom he described as “a long-time friend, a courageous leader, and a steadfast champion who always stood firmly for the rights of his people.”

Onyonka said the country was in mourning and offered prayers for those affected.

“As our country mourns this tragic loss, I join fellow Kenyans in prayer and extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the six Kenyans who lost their lives,” he said.

He added, “May they find strength, comfort, and peace during this incredibly difficult time.”
